Dogwood control

My property has some dense areas of rough leaf dogwood. I would like to take more of the property back converting it to native grasses. Currently the dogwood thickets harbor elm, hedge, locust, cedar, etc shielding them from fire.

I have been on my knees in these thickets cutting the dogwood with the chainsaw hoping that I can get light to the soil and hopefully grass will sprout. However I read fire isnt enough on established dogwood. Has anybody had luck with pastureguard on the big tall mature thickets.
