Cuttings planting/protecting

Bluegill

Yearling... With promise
I’m sure this has been asked. I searched the forums but didn’t find a lot about it. I’m planning on planting some hybrid willow/poplar cuttings next spring as a screen around two sides of my food plot. As of right now I’m planning on laying fabric for the cuttings. This is in a very high deer population area. My main question is what is the best way to protect the cutting from deer? I’ve planted a few before and they ate them off right away. Also has anyone had much success growing them w/o the use of fabric? I know a guy that claims he sprays a 3ft circle with round up in the fall then plants the cuttings next spring and has 90% survival rate.
Any help would be appreciated
