Cowpeas?

Boll Weevil

5 year old buck +
Anyone ever plant cowpeas that actually made pods and how did your deer react? Planted these as much for us as the critters and though they need to fill out a bit, pulled off a pretty good crop it seems. I recall as a kid my grandparents endlessly battling deer that got into their pea patch. Don't know if those deer were after the leaves, pods or both though?

For cowpeas to produce pods is fairly common here in the deep south. We usually put up several bags of shelled peas in the freezer as well. For sure deer eat the leaves and pods. Cowpeas are one of my...and the deers... favorite summer plants.

I'm in central Missouri. Couple years ago I tried either red rippers or iron clay planted in early July. They made that funny double pod like a maple seed. Deer loved them until the first hint of a frost, then they turned black and hit the ground with zero use. Since we got frost the first week of October I quit them better choices for me are rye and turnips.
