Basal Bark Treatment?

I'm looking for an efficient way to kill a bunch of smaller trees (from saplings to about 6" dia). I want to make several 1 to 3-acre bedding areas for deer on my 47-acre farm. I need to open the canopy up to let the sun hit the ground. I plan to hinge-cut about 1/3 of the trees in each area to add structure and browse. I also want to protect most of the black cherry and oaks that are dotted throughout.

How does the Basal Bark Treatment affect the surrounding areas? I want to be sure that the understory comes in thick. Also what about overspray? Do I need to carefully apply the treatment or can I get overspray on the carpet of dead leaves? Thanks for any input.

I spray remedy and diesel mix about 12 inches, early fall seems best but anytime sap is down should work

Your carrier will affect it as much as anything. Diesel can be pretty hard on the ground if it runs off.
