Regarding the planting rate. The 50 lbs. each of wheat and oats was way too much. I will reduce it to 25 lbs. of each this year. The soy beans were totally unnecessary and only included because a guy gave me a bag of seed. The deer cleaned the bean plants off before they reached six inches.

When you say 50lbs each...is that per acre because I heard when broadcasting cereals 75-100lbs per acre is what was needed which would put you right in there (granted towards the high end). However, as a cover crop I heard anywhere from 25-50lbs per acre is good.

You learned quickly that soybeans are not a good fit for throw and mow, but small plots of beans are often decimated anyway. Stay on this path and your soil will reward you even more in the long run! Watch for an infestation of weeds that are either naturally or have developed a resistance to gly. Consider using 24D or other appropriate herbicide if you begin to see any particular weed become problematic.

Great pics!

Thanks,

Jack

Eclipseman, that plot is 0.4 acres. In previous years I applied 25 lbs. of wheat and 25 lbs. of oats for the fall planting. That's a "planting rate" of a tad over 100 lbs. per acre. That rate did quite well for me. Last year, for some reason I can't explain (old age?) I put 50 lbs. of each (200 lbs. per acre). It was way too much, especially with clover, chicory and radish added to the mix.
