2014 Grafting Adventures of CrazyED

I have one spreadsheet that i have been using since 2013. Different tabs about what i grafted each year, plus a current inventory tab with projected year defined for planting.

Dude do you have to 1 up everything? LOL....

I hope those red fleshed ones take for ya, seems like the wood on the red fleshed crabs is more brittle like a pear when grafting. Least it seems that way for me.

I'm a very detail oriented person as you've probably figured out by now. And given the number of trees I have - i have to attempt to track them somehow :)

Looks awesome CE!

I tried my first whip tongue grafts this year with your Cherry Bomb and Airport scions to MM111 a couple weeks ago. The Cherry bombs are starting to leaf and the Airport are silver bud. Thanks again!

Great looking nursery CE. I might try to install a nursery once retired - too many irons in the fire now !!

Hammered out another bucket of trees last night. All I have is (2) more b118 and (10) g30.

131 apple grafts and 5 pear grafts. 40 are planted in the garden at the far end. I taught myself how to graft 3 years ago at the age of 60. I've grafted about 100 each of the last 3 years to get as many trees in the ground as I could and hopefully see them fruit. Everyone hopes to live into their 80's or longer but there's no guarantees. Still hope to graft a few "oddball" varieties each year for as long as I can.

IMG_3814.JPG IMG_3819.JPG Planted 30 of 35 from year's grafts today. I grafted Swamp apple (wild), Enterprise, Liberty, Kerr and Chestnut Crab. In the picture, they are mixed in with a few small trees and other rootstocks I regrafted onto from last year.

Nice looking nursery you have there, N.Y.-T. ^^^^

I went up to the farm on Friday. Here is my attempt to graft some sweet or tart cherries from Aero onto a wild black cherry tree. I expect failure but i had to try. I did the same thing with a wild plum tree where I put some plum scions onto the tree. We'll see if that one does any better, I did not take pictures.

These trees are great for hinge cutting. That's what happened to this one some time ago.

Never know till ya try, i bark grafted my inlaws pear, gotta love that stuff. I hope yours take, that'll be a nice treat in a few summers, eating some cherrys while checkin on the apple trees

Transplanting this bucket of grafts to the nursery tomorrow. Hopefully not too much transplant shock. Some of these are going crazy in the north facing window in my garage.

Here is an update on a little project I started at my parents house back in April of 2014.

June 10, 2014. Focus on the graft on the far right side of this frame.

It's about 2" at the base, and close to 8' tall. I expect some fruit next season. Probably end up taking out the other varieties on the left. We'll see.

Well that caliper got big in a HURRY! Nice job and really appreciate the update CE!

Nice. I wonder why the bark died back so far on the non graft side?

I have 4 trees on G30/B9 in my backyard at home. 1 zestar!, 1 sweet 16, 1 honeycrisp and 1 Cortland. This spring i also turned a few of them into frankentrees. I have limited space, can't plant more trees, so what do I do to add more varieties. Add a branch of this, add a branch of that. It's fun and I basically had 100% success. I easily added Liberty, Florina Q, Wolf River, Northern Spy, and Kerr to 3 trees. I'll probably add a few more varieties next year. here's a picture of one of the grafts which I pulled the tape off today. I think this was done mid to late may, looks great and already grew about 14".

Here is an update on the backyard frankentree mentioned above. I put a stick of liberty on a 7 or so year old Cortland on B9 last spring. I went out tonight to check it and it's puking fruit.
