2014 Grafting Adventures of CrazyED

Last weekend we had a nice heat wave come through. I think it was almost 70ish for like 3 days. I took my grafts out for a little sun bathing on my back patio (south side), underneath our big patio umbrella. Pulled them into the garage each night. Give them a little drink. They seem to respond well, then I went away turkey hunting for a few days and come back to a few trees exploding. Hitting some real nice growth spurts.

I keep them in a north facing window in the garage. Everything looking really good.

Gave my trees a nice healthy dose of spring today and set them outside for 6-8 hours. Seeing some really nice growth spurts.

Here's what 2 of them look like today, 1 month later. 4/29/2016. Today i pinched these down to a single leader and left the most aggressive one behind.

Very nice CE, I don't think I'll ever venture into the t-budding world but I love to see some success on all kinds of ideas!

T-budding works great for failed bench grafts. That's what these were.

Did you harvest your own summer bud wood?

Yes, right from a previously grafted tree a few feet away.

When I purchased my topsoil/mushroom compost I tarped it just so the rain didnt pack it down.

I packed them tight like I always do and then my helper watered them all. Should be cool tonight and tomorrow then towards the end of the week it should start warming up a bit.

Overall everything looks pretty good. I have not done a full inventory and likely wont for another month or two. I have had a few grafts look ok until August and then they finally croak. If i had to guess right now I would say i'm at roughly 85% success out of 100 grafts.

That is a sea of grafts, looking great.

It apperas that my transplatning from 5 gallon bucket to the nursery has been highly successful. Everything looks great with no casualties as far as I can tell. They've been out side almost 2 weeks now and the weather has been very mild.

Looks like low of 33 tomorrow night!

Incredibly beautiful bunch of grafts!

I've got a nice little Priscilla coming along in there going into year 2.

Good deal!! I was just looking at the trees in my yard today, she has a nice crop this year. And even though the tree next to it had a touch of fireblight, Pricilla was spotless and radiant!

Its pretty amazing what a little heat can do to promote growth. I have some plums that I grafted that I swear you can watch grow on a sunny, warm day!:) We always say around here that you can hear the field corn growing on those hot, humid summer days.

Looks great CE! Hope it did not get to cold for you

I had my grafts covered with bed sheets and tarps, I think it should be ok.
