    Training new leaders for spruce

I'm sure most of you have had some spruce or other young trees get damaged by wildlife or even weather. A nursery I bought some trees from had taught me that if the central leader is dead or damaged, you can cut it and train a new one. In this scenario I used an oak stake and an old rag to bend...

    Protecting spruce

In the past years I've removed some cages from my spruce trees after they've outgrown the cages. Mostly norways but also black hills variety. I'm talking 6-8' tall beautiful trees... the year after I remove the cage and repurpose it, I've had some problems with bucks rubbing the spruce nearly...

    Nitro surf

Looking at using Nitro surf with clethodim on my brassicas to hopefully get some nitrogen to the brassicas and knock out grasses at the same time. Does this seem like a winning strategy or are there reservations on something like this? The plot was mostly cool season CRP that was mowed and...

    Is something wrong with him

Was excited to get this guy on camera but upon closer inspection he appears to have something going on with his face and legs. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Kind of looks like mud but I haven't seen one look like this before and his eye looks a little swolen.

    Excessive P

I've been combing over some of my soil samples and all my samples in WI show that I have "excessive" levels of phosphorus in the soil. Is there something palatable to deer that I can throw in my fall blend which will use up a higher portion of that phosphorus than normal?

    Forage peas vs winter peas

I'm assuming forage peas are slightly more palatable when young in the Fall and the benefit of winter peas is potential N fixer in spring? Anybody have any first hand experience with both? Winter peas are ~$.20 more per pound from my seed supplier. Which equates to $10/bag.

    The Home 70

I've been a forum member a few years and really enjoy this community. You guys always share good stuff and the amount I've learned here has been important with my own habitat work. I've always been very hesitant to share anything publicly on the internet but I feel pretty good about sharing some...

What is this and how do i handle it?

Some of the apple trees in my home orchard are experiencing these caterpillar homes, my father in law says to burn them, is there a way to spray the "nest" without damaging the tree or is burning my best option?

    Spring weeds

I've been thinking recently of some early flushes of weeds that grow in some of my plots. I don't really pay much attention to them this time of year or worry about them. Curious what others see. A new one I see this year is identified as Shepherd's purse. It has already bolted and grows...

    Short season

A friend and I always do the MN turkey season with archery tackle but we've never doubled up less than an hour into our first hunt before. Pretty special morning for us, lots of laughs and memories made.

    Pierce County WI 40 acres

This is a property of mine that I recently purchased and have to sell to afford a property that is currently for sale near my honey hole. Otherwise I wouldn't be moving on from it, this one is a gem. In one of the best valleys of Western WI, Rush River Valley is legendary among the locals with...

    Land partnership

Strongly considering entering into an agreement with a friend on a parcel of land. I can't afford the whole thing and it very nearly borders my best property. I can't stomach the thought of it selling to a group of four or more guys who don't practice some version of QDM, so I've decided to...

    Soil testing probes

Anyone have a favorite? Pros/cons of the different styles? Just use a Shovel? I'm planning to upgrade my soil testing numbers this year and into the future so I want to buy a prove for more consistency year over year. Hope to see some improvements with the new drill and minimal tillage.

Wisconsin legislators author bill to reduce doe harvest in Northern Zone

I'm surprised this hasn't come up here yet, unless I missed it. Have to believe we have some forum members with property in this region. TL;DR no antlerless tags for 4 years. https://www.deeranddeerhunting.com/content/articles/deer-news/new-bill-aims-to-prohibit-doe-hunting-for-4-years

    Pheasant habitat

Wanted to start a thread for those in the pheasant's "native" range of the upper Midwest. I'm aware they aren't a native bird but they have adapted to the region over the course of the past 100+ years and thrive under certain conditions. At my place in MN, we have a small wild population of...

    Does anyone know why?

When buck's antlers have oddities or drop tines, they are sometimes black in color once the velvet comes off?
