    New property, asking for advice

All good advice so far. It looks like a great property in the making with lots of good natural features like funnels and pinch points, topography changes, edges, etc. Are all of the fields planted in crops? If so, access to the upper section of that middle block of timber and the left...

    Layered Rye

I'm still very new to all this habitat stuff so I do watch his videos (along with many others), but I agree on the repetitive convincing. He says on it every video now, along with a smirk that seems to be a nod to everyone on these forums. Almost like..."hey, you guys know I did that first...

    Girdled Apple Trees

I've heard that using soil from beneath the tree and packing it on the wound will help....something to do with the localized microbes. Maybe that's just for diseases though? My neighbor had an ornamental cherry that got diseased real bad and i told him about that, the tree is completely healed...

    spring planted winter rye?

Thanks for the info guys. I'll likely wait until Aug/Sep before mowing it down and that way I can keep the cover in there for the summer. I already have some ladino clover growing along with my rye and oats so if i wanted to throw some red or crimson clover in the mix this fall and then mow...

    spring planted winter rye?

Does anyone just let their rye/oats go to seed and die back naturally without cutting it in the summer or fall? Would the seed still be viable for self re-seeding? Are there any negative impacts by leaving it standing all summer?

    Pears won't bear

I'm nowhere near as experienced as most everyone else here but I did have a few observations from the pears I planted last year. I put four potted trees in the ground in the spring of 2018, 2 keiffers, 1 moonglow, and 1 bartlett. The bartlett and the biggest keiffer (approximately 7 ft) were...

    Hunt or habitat?

Like many of you, I've gone through a transition where it used to be all about the hunting but now I really enjoy the habitat work. This is only my second year owning land but I have been looking at properties and thinking about habitat work for the last few years and the more I do it/think...

Who's working in the woods this weekend?

Planted 10 persimmon and 10 crabpple seedlings this weekend. I also cut down a few more trees to open up some canopy around the food plots and provide some more screening around one of them. I also posted the southern and western property lines since I got my access trails cut all the way...

Very unique!! Those crooks are perfect natural "chairs", the kind that make you want to climb up to take a rest, swing your legs, and enjoy nature.
