    Controlled Burn

I did my 1st controlled burn over the last couple weekends! I've been reading up and watching tutorials for a few years, in preparation. The strip on the right (aerial drone image), was our initial test strip, which was a simple back burn into the wind to see if we felt like we could contain...

    Red Haven Peach Tree Help

Planted a couple Red Haven Peach trees in 2015. This particular one has grown roughly 3x larger than the other one planted. This year the leaves are looking really weak with no new growth. I trimmed off all the dead/dying twigs, put a couple fertilizer spikes at the drip-lines, removed the...

    My Son Scored

My oldest son, Ty (11), took this 8 point on Friday night with his bow. It was a 15 yards shot from a tree stand. It was 185 lbs live weight and 150 lbs dressed out. This is his biggest buck and his 2nd using a compound bow. I had a long standing event to go to on Friday but things can...

    Herbicide for Spraying Around Spruces

What kind of herbicide is anyone using to keep the area around your spruces (White and Norway) clean? I thought I had a recommendation from Dbltree, but I can't seem to find it now... If memory serves me right, it was safe to spray around them, BEFORE new buds form, maybe by mid-April?

    Fruit Tree Fertilizer

I just ordered some of these for fruit tree fertilizer: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A0YHHM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 I was only able to buy 1 of the Miracle Grow version... They only showed as having 1 available, but not anymore... What is everyone else using?

Central Leader or Open Center Pruning?

How are you guys all pruning the shapes of your apple trees? Central Leader? Open Center? Other? I like the idea of the open center and having the branches more out than up, but I like the looks of a central leader. I do plan on using some apple's for home use, but the majority for...

    Dappled Willow Progress?

Hi - Anyone have any progress pictures of how their Dappled Willows are doing? I'll take some pics of mine this week. I planted them in the Spring of 2013 as 12" cuttings (in lumite like material). They are now roughly 6' tall and 4-5' wide average. I never did any pruning or cut them back...

    Storing Hybrid Willow/Poplar Cuttings

Hey all - I'd like to take some cutting to move around from my Hybrid Willow and Poplars. I've got a dark, cool room to keep them in, but what should I use to cover them up? I don't have any of the really long plastic bags like they came in anymore. I'll be cutting 5-6' sections to plant.

When Do you Take the Cage Off?

Hey all - wondering when you guys take the cages off of your fruit trees? It was easy to prune my trees the 1st and 2nd years, but now on years 3 and 4 it's getting difficult. I didn't prune and shape as much as I could/should have early on, but I did as much as I was comfortable with. I'm...

    Boys Found a Matching Set

My oldest boys found a small, matching set of antlers from a young 8 point this last weekend :) They were near a Sumac rubbing post that I had "planted" in our Brassica plot last Summer. They were thrilled!

Voting Request - My Boys Sportsmans Guide Pictures

Hey guys - I have a favor to ask. I submitted hunting pics of me and my kids for the SportsmansGuide ShareYourThrill contest through the last year. It's down to the final 25 pics for some pretty big gift cards for the top 3 voted pics. It just so happens that 3 of our pictures made it into...

Anyone a member of Sportsman's Guide?

If so, check your last catalog for a pic of my oldest son with his first buck (7 pt.) and first deer with a bow from last fall! Here's the pic: And this one was in the Spring catalog with my middle son and his (3rd) record book turkey, 11" Beard and 1 1/8" spurs:

    Habitat Progress Pictures

I really enjoy seeing everyone's progress pics, so hopefully this will force me to take more and share. Maybe not, but that's the goal :) Some 2nd year Miscanthus X Giganteus from Maple River Farms. Heights range from 4' to just over 6' as of yesterday. Number of stalks this year range as...

    Miscanthus x Giganteus

Went and picked up my order of MxG's from Maple River Farms last night. I'll be planting them tomorrow evening, and getting the rows prepped tonight. I planted 200 of them last year and they all survived, averaging 4-5' with 3-5 stalks each. I'm phasing out some areas where I normally plant...

    Red-Osier and Silky Dogwood Enhancements

I've got a good problem for once... I've got a nice swath of Red-Osier and Silky dogwoods that are looking like they will naturally meet up to a very small section of mature trees and brush, over time. The ground is damp year round, but not flooded. Is there anything I can or should do to...

    2nd Year Switchgrass Spraying

I was planning on spraying a 2nd year field of CIR switchgrass this spring (late April). My plan was to use Dbltree's, 1 quart gly and 1-2 oz's Oust XP /acre dosage. Here's my issue/question though. I've got Norway and White Spruces planted all around the perimeter of this field, Chestnuts...

    Late Winter Food Sources

We all know the importance of keeping deer fed throughout the year. I was reminded of this when taking my oldest son out rabbit hunting a couple weeks ago. This 1st picture is of my Winter Rye plot. Notice very few tracks behind him. This was a couple days after a decent accumulation of...

Michigan Youth - 1st Buck and Bowkill Update

I finally got the video done. Now please forgive the fact that I'm a complete noob trying to film my kids hunting, it's shaky, out of focus, using an old camera and trying to learn how to edit as I go. I would have cut out most of the parts inside the blind but that's where you can hear our...
