    Clover for wet soil

I’ve had a plot that didn’t drain well before and used Imperial clover by Whitetail Institute. It held up well. According to Google, it appears as tho Aslike is one of the top clovers for poorly drained soils. I would like to do a mix if 3/4 perennial clovers in this 3/4 acre plot next year. I’m...

Plant the grain portion or wait longer ?

Already planted the brassicas but the grain portion of the LC Mix I’m thinking of putting in Tuesday here in Connecticut. Average frost is Oct 11-20. I ideally would like to plant it a week into Sept if I could pick a date for it to rain. Our winters around here are changing over the last few...

    Spraying question ( apple trees)

I thought during bloom you didn’t spray so bees could pollinate. On a spray guide I’m reading, it says to spray at bloom when 50 perc of the blossoms are open. It says to spray with Captan, Myclobutanil and Streptomycin . Can someone with experience elaborate on this. Thx,

Herbicide I can use near pond ?

Is there a herbicide I can use to spray near a pond that won’t harm the fish or the water ? It’s a right of way that I want to spray to kill weeds and keep clean for my mom. It’s a decent size hill going down towards the pond so when it rains the run off will go in. Any input would be great. Thx

    Yellow bellied sap sucker

Anyone ever have a problem with this bird? I’m starting to as I see a few of my pear and apple trees with holes in them due to this bird. Does anyone know of a herbicide or deterrent I can use on the trees? I can post a pic of what these birds do to the tree Saturday if anyone wanted to see the...

    Apple trees on a slope

Was thinking of using 5 inch plastic edging to act as a basin when planting my trees on a big slope. Anyone against this? I know people have used gravel and topsoil as well.

    Will this day ever come?

Every time I plant a 2 year old fruit tree and realize it won’t be really effective until probably 10 years later, I always say to myself that there will be a day when you can plant a fruit tree and the growth will be 5x faster than we are dealing with today. With the advanced technology we have...

Fruit tree mistakes you made ?

I made a few by planting some trees in bad locations whether only one side got sun by being too close to wood line. I got very poor growth. What a huge difference in growth when you plant in full sun vs partial. What mistakes have others made?

    Idaho savage caught

They finally made an arrest in the quadruple homicide case. It really made my day to hear this, although he’s innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. At least a judge saw enough probable cause ( 51 per) to issue the warrant . I feel much better and happier for the victims families and...

    Critique my Vole guard method

I just did this today to get feedback on it. This is not a real apple tree and the illustration isn’t perfect , but hopefully it’s enough for you guys to get the idea of what I’m thinking. Picture 1: is a pic of a 4 inch piece of hardware cloth . It’s about 6 inches from base of tree and the...

    Barred owl nest box

Anyone ever put up an owl box close to their orchard to rodent control? I just put up two yesterday for the Barred owl. There is an owl called the Barn owl too, which is great for rodent control but in Connecticut they are in very low numbers. There is a difference in the size of their entrance...

    Atv rear mounted seeder

Anyone have one of these that has no complaints with it. I’m going to buy one this week, but always like to do some homework on them first. I’ve read online that many of them spit the seeds on you as your seeding since there is no shield ( one of many complaints). Do some come with shields? Do...

    Tree tubes for fruit trees?

I’m debating if I should use the 6 ft tree tubes next year for when I plant more trees? How many of you use them? I’ve never used them in the past, but always had good protection and success between the window screen, weed mats, stone and 5 ft welded wire fencing. Some who have used them say the...
