    Getting ready

If possible if dunk those trees in a 5 gallon bucket of water and let them sit there while planting your trees. Those leaves turning black make me think they probably got a little dry. If you. Can't do that make sure and water them into the hole well when you plant them.

    Saving Apple trees

What we have done is planted an extra rootstock directly next to the tree and grafted it into the danger tree above the area of damage. I'll try and take a picture next time were up there.

Will my soils allow for Chestnuts?

If it's well drained and doesn't hold water you could give it a try. Though, if your unsure I would try direct seeding some as you can typically pick seeds up fairly cheap.

    Help with beginner bench grafting

What I've always worried about grafting outside to early is unusual warm temps that get the Scion to break bud then have another hard freeze come through killing the freshly broken buds.

    Apple Trees from cuttings?

Not sure about cuttings but I shoved the tops of last year's rootstocks in the ground, (15) and 2 grew into nice 1 year whips

Here is what I am thinking of planting.

Yeah, in Lee Calhoun's book it is listed as extinct. We got in touch with the author of a book I believe about Sheridan Arkansas where he talked about the Tull apples, and get still knew where several trees were. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

Best apple pie I've ever had was made with Tull apples though it is possible I'm biased.

Why some bare root trees just don't grow.

Some of our trees didn't really grow well til their third year in the ground though we do have an Ark black from a local nursery that has done about as well as you describe yourself as well as a Shannon Pippin that has not grown well.

    Arkansas Blacks

That's strange I wouldn't describe the apples I've had a mealy either, normally Arkansas Black right off the tree is very hard and crisp

Give it time or start over?

I remove any branch below 5 feet. When you prune it as long as you have one bud you should be good.

Give it time or start over?

Just wait for everything to go dormant than late this winter in Feb or March cut the central leader back to one of the buds at a slight angle.

Give it time or start over?

If it was me all the tall lanky trees I'd cut back to about 5 or 6 feet. May get them to produce branches and hopefully give them time to put on some girth especially now your talking better care of them.
