Who's working in the woods this weekend?

Chopping trails today on a property that I get to hunt 2 years out of every 6 (long story). I used my weed flail, that I call the DR trimmer. Because after 4 hours, I'm gonna need a DR!

Stumbled upon this stand of jewel weed while cutting trails.

That's too funny.

At least you can make it four hours @KDdid

I think it would take me about 15 minutes!

Here's a pic of my weed flail - couldn't resist! Honestly, I love my DR. I have the 14 horsepower 26 inch electric start. It's been even more useful than I had hoped or planned. I now look for excuses to use it.

I love it!!! I really want one, just can't justify the cost right now.

I went back today and hung 3 stands, trimmed shooting lanes, and sprayed all the trails I cut yesterday with gly- this winter I'm going in with a chainsaw and pruning a butt load of AO and JBH out of my way. I'm going to offer to maintain the place a little better than the other guys that rotate the property with me , and see if I can't end up with more permanent access.

It was definitely an investment. $2400. I'm kind of in between right now. I've got a Kubota B series in the future budget but I'm going to hold off awhile on that and I had too much that I felt I needed to mow. I rented a Billy Goat several times last year and I figured I'd just bite the bullet and buy my own. I couldn't decide between the tractor and ATV when I bought my property and I went with the ATV. I've posted before that if I had one do over I'd have bought the tractor instead. In reality though the tractor I would have bought would have been too small and the ATV has worked well enough. In the end, I'll end up with both the more appropriate tractor and the DR. It's a truly useful machine for places a tractor won't go and a lawn mower wouldn't survive. As a new owner of small property I'd say it's been my best investment thus far.

Forgot to post this. I put in a 1/3 acre food plot on Friday. Sprayed Thursday, then did throw-n-mow Friday. I also added 200lbs of lime. I'm hoping it turns out alright, I sure threw enough seed out to have something work out.

Lots to think about, for sure. I'm in a little different situation myself, I'm in the home stretch of a rebuild of my dad's old 4020 JD right now, and it's been fun, but that's too much tractor for 28 acres. I'm starting out with bare land, but putting trees in over the next few years, and can see myself buying a 40-50 hp tractor with a FEL soon, and maybe adding an ATV to my arsenal as well. Good news is that there's lots of old small equipment for sale around here, stuff that's too big for the average hobby farmer, and too small for the " real" farmers.

anyone have a good guide to building a pull behind out of a cutting deck? looking at this deck as a tag along to cut my NY lawn with quicker...... bit of angle, some plate, a pulley, a belt, a 14 or more hp vertical shaft and I'm thinking I'm good to go.

I was able to get out a couple times this weekend. I've finished clearing out shooting lanes prepping for my two new stands. I also released some areas around my three stands from last year. I learned one valuable lesson this week. I have the hunter safety system lifelines with the rubber cowbell. That cowbell is a great place for a wasp nest. All three of them had wasp nests in them. They got sprayed today!

My cereal grains are germinating but we really need rain. My brassica experiment looks like it's going to be a failure. We had lots of rain the first week but not a drop since. They're pretty dried up. I spread some cereal rye over it last week before a forecasted rain, which we didn't get, but hopefully it'll fill in as moisture allows. Worst case I guess I try again the first week of October.

Well, I got out of the house this weekend and gave the uncles bulldozer a facelift/makeover. I used the modern day Deere Dozer word Font and decal placements. I couldn't get a good Logo cut out on my vinyl cutter, and will try in the future. I was scared the updated Yellow would look bad, but I think it pops pretty nicely for an old Dozer.

I got to get some scrape trees planted this week.

Put up two new stands yesterday. I wanted to get them up a couple weeks ago but it just never worked out. I bought two of the x-stand Onyx stands. They went up so easy and seem to be very comfortable too. Our bow season opens up on Friday this week. I would have liked to get the stands up and then wait a couple weeks before going back out but I'll be hunting a couple hours in the morning on opening day anyway. I'll probably use one of my two really low impact entry stands if the wind cooperates.

I pulled cards on all of my cameras too. In the area by my second water hole we have lots of doe activity. I think that'll be a great stand when we have a north, northwest or straight west wind. That stand will be one that won't get used unless the wind is perfect.

I also checked on my food plots, or should I say dust plots? My brassicas that started out so well are all but dead. We have had zero rain since I planted my cereal grain mix. Some germinated and have just died. Other spots have germinated and are hanging on but it's thin. I'm really hoping that most of my seed is just laying there under the dirt waiting for rain but there's a good chance I'll be throwing some more rye down the first week of October if we can get some moisture.

The oldest son and I trimmed and touched up our shooting lanes and put the pads on the stand seats last weekend, everything looks good...we are ready for deer season to kick off in a couple weeks!

Coming up great! ^^^^^^^

You northern guys with your ferns....something I never see here.
I have some on my place and I'm only one county north of the Ohio River (zone 6a)... Not sure how or why yet.

I'll be in the woods this weekend. Both working and hunting. I have 2 large oaks down and chunked up ready for the splitter. Another that can come down if time permits. One stand needs to be finished off. Do some cleaning in the cabin, sweep off the roof and deck, windows and just straighten up a bit. Got about 30 cuttings of elderberry, silky dogwood and button brush to put in the ground. I potted them this spring at home and they are about 3' tall now. Might have a bonfire Saturday night. Oh, I'll hunt for an hour or two Saturday night. I'm seeing a steak on the grill in there somewhere as well. I got a rescue dog last December as a replacement for my son who left to pursue his life this past August. This will be his first hunting season at the cabin, even though he'll be doing little to no hunting of his own:). Looking forward to a nice quiet weekend of work I so love to do and some relaxations!

I will be up in NY, running my new saws, got an ms 390 w 20 in bar, and a husky 460 w a 24 in bar.......... time to start laying up wood for heat for the winter. Sure wich I could find oak up there, mostly maple and cherry, cherry preferred but less abundant. if I get a walk I will see how the bushel of rye I cast into the open woods is doing too.

that is the view from my tower stand, panorama shot out left, center , and right window. right now that is the only patch of green in a 26 acre field, I will be adding more in front of the stand in the way of rye, and 2 other spots near stands. RIght now the deer run across the field to get to that patch of green, volunteer oats, with turnips and collards thrown on top.

I will be tentatively making my way back into the woods after planting last weekend. I learned a valuable lesson on Sunday. Make sure that you're not squatting on a hive of ground bees before dropping trou. Luckily, I was only stung on my hands...it could have been worse. Much worse :emoji_cold_sweat::emoji_grin:.
