North Mo

5 year old buck +
Wish I had a picture with a full body view but what is everyone's opinion on the age of this buck. This pic was taken a week ago under a pear tree. The body and main beam length have me thinking he may be as old as 5 1/2 even though his rack overall would be below average for a buck of this age in our area. If he is that old we'll make him a shooter. If he is 4 1/2 I would probably let him go for now. HUNT0161.JPG HUNT0162.JPG HUNT0166.JPG

I'll be brave enough to go first.....

With a neck/chest intersection that big already (a week ago) I would personally doubt he is 4.5. I would put him at 5.5+ (after 5.5 I give up trying to guess).

I think he is one of those bucks who grew a big body and forgot the rack.

I'm with John, after about 4 I give up trying to put an exact age on them.
Based on what I see I think he's older than 4. I've let larger antlered deer walk but if that guy came by me he wouldn't leave.

Antlers could just be small for his age or he could be so old there on the down swing. It would be interesting to send his teeth in for aging.

Absolutely with John on this one

Old enough.

We are having our worst year ever for buck pictures this season.

We've gotten this guy twice in the last week. The biggest "resident" we have this year.

I put him in the same class as the one you posted. All meat and no bone.

Pics from 2 years ago but this guy was way up on my hit list. I really believe he died of natural causes.

Same story here. This guy's rack got smaller. He's a handsome buck. My guess was 5.5 but could be older since his antlers when downhill. Hope he gives some kid an opportunity!

I always think it's interesting when someone asks if it's a shooter. No one should make that decision but you. If for no other reason, we have no idea what kind of bucks you have at your place. Is that the biggest buck on the property or do you have 4 others that are bigger. If it's one you like, shoot. If not, don't. You're the only one that needs to be happy.

I get and agree with those sentiments. If you're paying the taxes, shoot what ever you want that makes you happy. If you're happy, I'm happy!

So darn much so that I'm happy for a guy the shoots a spike and gets excited about it. If he's excited I'm excited!

The caveat comes in when and if you're in an area that produces lots of of 125 plus inch deer and you've killed them. (Please don't read this as snotty). It's not snotty, it's geography. I think North Mo's farm is close to my farm. I can kill a 130 inch deer every year. Not because I do anything special, just because of where I hunt.

So the next question is do I let every 125-149 inch buck walk in the hopes of killing a 150 class buck.

The first quick answer is sure let the little one grow. But it's not that easy. Some deer if given the chance to reach 6 or 7 won't even break the 150 mark while some 3 year olds have already broke it.

If you're ever lucky enough to hunt those places and start to understand what's around you it gets tough.

Do you shoot antlers or do you shoot years? If you pick antlers a 7 year old 8 point gets a pass while a 4 year old 12 gets killed.

I get it, really "I" get it. Boo hoo, you poor guy. You have to figure out what big deer to shoot. But it does get hard to pick out a 4 year old with potential to explode over a 6 year old 8 at the end of the road.

I don't think NorthMo is asking if it's OK to shoot this deer. He knows he can shoot what ever he wants and look like a champ on the Internet.

It's more of a ? of does he look old.

I try to not even look at antlers. "Try, but it doesn't always happen". I'm shooting for a 5+ year old dink this year. I'm trying to improve my game based on location.

I may tag a big 3 year old, if I do I'll celibate him but I'll know I screwed up.

Not snotty, just realizing where I hunt.

Thanks to everyone for their opinion on the age of this buck. Looks like the consensus is that he will most likely never have much more antler than he has now so that helps us make our decision. I showed this buck to the wife and kids today. They said let him go, he will be bigger next year. :emoji_heart_eyes: 10160294.JPG

Maybe, maybe not. just keep him over there. I have such a hard time with deer from a mile or more away.

That buck is a tank of a deer and as such makes his antlers look smaller than they really are. Shot him or not is your decision.....you know more about what your property produces than anyone else. I have shot two bucks I think to be 5 year olds now and in both cases I was conflicted because the body size made the antlers look small. Both deer scored mid 140's total inches before deductions......not a trophy to some but a real nice deer here. You see that real thick and heavy neck - where it looks like his head is too small and you got a dandy deer regardless of antler score.

I agree he is a very good specimen even without an overly large looking rack and I think you are onto something about the body making the antlers look smaller than they are. Heck a 130 rack still looks great to me whenever I see one. Everyone seems to agree that he is likely 5+ so I would be very happy if I or anyone else were lucky enough to take him.
