Deer love sugar beets

When given lemons make lemonade.

Here is a picture of a thin stand of June planted sugar beets. I kept the plot clean all summer and what beets were growing really benefited from the extra room and put on the tonnage. I broadcast brassica in them a few weeks ago and they are looking good.

Can someone PM a source for these RR B's ?

So my uncle was able to capitalize on all my time, money, and careful planning that went into planting a beautiful stand of sugar beets.

Thanks to the idiots in charge of the Minnesota DNR this is the second buck he shot this year. Good for him but I’m more than frustrated to say the least.

Can you elaborate on the frustration?

Can you elaborate on the frustration?

I'm frustrated because he shot a buck with his bow earlier this season. Last year he would have been tagged out as far as bucks are concerned and I would have had an opportunity to shoot the buck he shot last night. I have been hunting that buck almost exclusively for the past 3 years. The sugar beet plot that I planted, the shooting house that I picked the spot for, hauled out with my brothers tractor, and positioned properly was put there exclusively for a late muzzle loader hunt.

I had a conversation earlier this year about my frustrations with the opportunity to be able to shoot three bucks and the herd not being able to support it. Both of my uncles said that they didn't think that anyone would do that. Well one of them shot a second buck last night and the other one is out there right now trying to do the same. (they both shot 2.5 y/o bucks already)

I was frustrated after last years season (uncles both shot bucks I passed up) and swore that I wouldn't be hunting the family property anymore. My cousin calmed me down and said this year would be different. I know that this is MY problem and not their's, they havent done anything "wrong" as far as the regs go. In this day and age there is no need for sustenance harvest. My chest freezer is full of beef, pork, salmon, and a little left over deer meet. And I mean FULL. I am after a MATURE buck. I could easily shoot 5 different 2.5-3.5 year old bucks every year, there are plenty of them out there.

I could put more of an effort in to harvest a buck earlier in the year but early season is HARD. Not to mention that with work being busy in the fall, my wife coaching, and my daughters playing volleyball I don't have much time. With a properly positioned food plot with the proper plants growing late season can be really easy and some of the biggest bucks in the area can be drawn in.

There is thousands of acres of state land that I might just start hunting next year. At least with state land my expectations will be much different and I know I will have others to contend with and any deer is fair game. The thing is I don't want to. I don't even want to hunt a different parcel of private property. I just want to manage the family farm and TRY to shoot the biggest buck it has to offer. If I dont so be it. I don't have to shoot a buck. I would be perfectly ok if someone else shoots the biggest buck the farm has if its the only buck they are going to harvest.

I am going to try to have a sit down with my uncles this weekend before one of them goes back home and try to agree to some ground rules. If I cant its time for plan B.

I agree, hard to see that bruiser get shot out from under ya, under those circumstances. Lotta heartache in deer hunting, and that's a good example. Hopefully your uncle appreciates both the bucks he was fortunate enough to tag this year.

Not much you can do on family land. If I were you, I'd abandon that property and put your hard work towards a property you can control. Hard feelings are sure to follow if you try to start changing others ways.

Thanks for the explanation,..

Ya tough call,..

I know that frustration. It’s why other than a youth hunter, my brother, son and I are the only ones hunting my farm anymore. Easy fix for me, it’s my farm. Not so easy for you. Though it did crimp my relationship with my FIL a bit.

I wouldn’t risk straining a relationship with uncles. I’d just move to plan B. They may miss you next year when there an no plots.

And that a Nice buck!

If it is family property, you are in a difficult spot. Whether it be a family cottage on the lake or a piece of hunting ground, very difficult to get agreement on things.

Very easy to become the person who does all the work while others enjoy the benefits of your hard labor.

Sounds like a good time to take a break and try some where else. You never win in a family disagreement.

I won’t ruin the relationship. I’ll try to get them to come to my terms and if not I’ll find somewhere else. I won’t argue or point fingers.

That's a great buck. Does your uncle get priority hunting on the property or why weren't you hunting there if you put in all that work specifically for the muzzleloader season?

He seems to think so. He doesn't have anymore ownership of the property than any of his other siblings though. Mainly due to him being retired, living on the property, and hunting every day. I am busy with coaching wrestling and have kids in other activities as well. I was also waiting for the temps to fall out the bottom (like they did this past week)

ST,
I've been right where you are. When you don't own it, all that work is often for someone else's benefit. In my case, I was doing plots with a handheld sprayer, 5hp rototiller and a rake. Then the owner of the property (my relative) would let a buddy of his hunt. Sickening feeling. So, I did have to go in debt, but my wife and I bought our own farm. We've never been happier. Good luck.

Buying my own place isn't in the cards for the near future unfortunately. I am going to be buying into the family business this next year and that will for the most part take up any available money I have every month. I do have a couple of buddies that leased a property this past year. I may talk to them and see If I can get in on leasing with them. Not sure the property can handle an extra hunter though.

Not wanting to take this thread to far off the rails. How has everyone's sugar beets done this year so far?

That is a great buck and I understand your frustration. This is a good place to vent, get it out of the system, get some ideas, and keep the family relationships intact. Good luck on the rest of your season and next year's quest for new land.
