Bertier

tynimiller

5 year old buck +
This is a buck off the 22 acres I bought just last year. Named Gary last year he was a budding 5x5 but had a non typical 5 to 6 inch tine shooting in off his right beam after his G2 last season....fast forward to this year and he messed his left side up and his "strong side" right side blew up.

So hence the "side" thing and name Gary....it became Bertier or Gary Bertier from Remember The Titans for those making the connections.

He has taken over a bedding area I spent a week and tons of chainsaw time making usable again as it was far too thick for even deer to use last year.

Someone asked so threw a couple together of him walking...no apparent injury to back legs or front for that matter. Assuming did something early in velvet or unseen infection.

Video? Some right there in the quad trail and of em sliding back into the bedding. Nothing visible to his walk, so if so it is very subtle.

added a link to a quick video I threw up just of him walking. Nothing apparent

Buddy of mine last night said Bertier crossed road well ahead of him entering the beans to the southeast...his velvet hanging...cannot wait to get hard horned images of this dude.

Neat buck. Good luck gettin a crack at him!

Great looking buck. Body looks young to me. Good one to have around!

My first thought was an injury to a back leg too. Nothing apparent that I could see.

Last year I passed his pictures around a decent amount and the consensus was a 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 last season. So for the most part thought is 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 this season. Either way he's the biggest buck out there as of now...however there is a big old 8 that wouldn't score as much but is easily the oldest and would also get an arrow.

I've gotten a chance to look through every single video we have of him so far, about 10 mins in 10 second chunks altogether. Problem is majority of the time his head is down and munching on the clover...but I for the life of me cannot notice any kind of injury which is affecting his gate or stance. So, leads me to eliminate injury for now which leaves either velvet damage or infection we cannot see which he's recovered from.

Hoping to get some hands on analysis this fall though LOL!

Nice looking buck. I'm glad you're seeing some rewards for your effort to keep the property deer-friendly - except for October and November that is.

Cool rack on that buck. Good luck on tagging him.

Well fellas little update. Few weeks back I did some intense digging through last years' photos and this year to throw every known movement of Bertier on to my spreadsheets I make for bucks chasing (tracks wind and travel direction, time, legal time or not, location on property, suspected reason for movement (food, doe, going to bed...), moon time and some other jazz....

Well...I uncovered some videos from a cam last year I obviously blew through thinking he never moved (I tend to fly through videos unless something catches eye). Well I found a couple, one had to have been a few days or even hours from his injury I suspected was a car and now am over 90% sure...as his back right leg in the video he is limping on pretty bad, also as stated before his entire right antler down to pedicle was ripped off (video shows some bleeding from this). No doubt he was a car impact survivor. Well then this Spring rolled around and he seemed fine (just a little hint of a hitch in his giddy up) as you guys saw above...

Well now sometime in October we got pictures of him holding it up again...and just yesterday I was by a cam so pulled card and on the 17th of this year he actually walks by the thing nose to the butt of a doe and his right rear leg is clearly not being used...muscle definition is 50% or more gone. I suspect at some point he re-injured too much by running or jumping or even fighting and it no longer is functional as it was this spring/summer/early fall.

If I can get them to load I'll share the recent video of him....but hopefully on Wednesday when East winds slide in I can catch up with him and send an arrow through him at his favorite small plot (clover/chicory) next to one of his main bedding areas.

Uploaded the quick vid to youtube for ease of sharing:

I would think his chances of long term survival would be diminished with a rear leg like that. Hope you can give him the send off he deserves.

Yup between now and ML he is the main focus. From there on I may let Pops shoot him (as I rarely take anything but bow)

Good luck on him. Their rough Kritters though. My favorite deer was a limper last winter and he's doing fine still today.

Just watched the first vid. That's a cool buck and great history.

I never quite get the bow only thing. I did take my bow over my rifle a few times this rifle season based on the stand I was in. But at the end of the day putting that dude on the ground would be fun. How it happens comes second. IMHO

Just something I've never really personally liked...each their own flavor preference I guess. I did tell Pops about a week ago, Bertier could get me to grab the ML. Really only 2 stands on this property that it would matter though as they're the only ones over the food offering shots out of bow range.

I am pretty focused on Bertier and him only....even passed a buck just shy of 130 night before gun opened because I told myself unless it is my biggest to date it is Bertier or nothing. I've enjoyed the season, but man I'd love to get him down.

Shoot....I got a .257 Roberts from a friend of ours that sadly passed a few years back.....maybe I take him on a hunt one last time in a way.
