In defense of your kids, they probably have a pretty good idea of the bigger bucks running around the neighborhood that likely don't get their pictures shown on internet forums!
Those old 8 pointers are cool deer regardless of their score though and there aren't a lot of places that deer like that would get a pass.
I've very lucky to have great (or predictable) neighbors. The one north of me is a hunter and habitat guy. We share pics and discuss which one's we'd like to save and whatnot. Several other neighbors put out feeders and blinds. I suspect they over hunt certain spots. I don't have feeders as I suspect old bucks learn to avoid those areas. I put a lot of effort into not burning out stand sites. I will often skip certain stands for a year or two, alternating back and forth where I hunt. Plus I'm fine with tag soup. I only let an arrow fly once every 2-3yrs on average. I think I have a lot of deer who believe my place is a sanctuary. Suckers!
