WHAT TO DO WITH THE DARK CRAP

WTNUT

5 year old buck +
Heree is a photo of one of my first year trees. Look at the black crap around where the nursery cut the leader when shipped. Another sprout started as a leader but attaches to the unkown black crap. Should I cut it back below the black crap next sprint?

No no bad leaves or sign of blight on this tree.

I am not sure but it looks like surface mold to me. I dont think it will be an issue, but you can head it back to clean wood if it still is present next spring. I would clear that grass away and make sure that tree is getting plenty of sun and good air flow.

It also might be one of those pruning sprays that some people use. It's almost like paint except thicker, and what I've seen is black.

I don't think it is spray. I would have noticed it when I planted it this spring.

Could you take a spray bottle filled with water and see if it washes off ?

Yes, I will try that this weekend - good idea.

What I see on my Snowsweet is some type of black fungus. Stu has mentioned it also. I would try some anti fungal spray for fruit trees.

Maya- you listening??
