I’ve got a “wood plot I carved out amongst the hedge and locust. I’ve already got the Native Nursury “deer pear in it growing like weeds on the north side of it. I’ve got persimmons along the west and trail leading into it. I’ve got oak and mulberry east and SE of it. I planted some sawtooth on the south side but have lost 3 of them. THe one that remains is growing like a weed though. Any recommendation on a different kind of fruit tree to go along with them. Thought maybe crab apple but there are a lot of cedars so not sure if apple rust affects them.

A lot depends on your location. Suggest you add it to your profile. I'm sure there are some crab apples that are CAR resistant. Chestnuts are an option. It also depends on your objective as well. There are lots of good browse trees. Plums come to mine. Speaking of chestnuts, the more I learn about Seguins, the more I like what I see. It will be a while before I can vouch for them in my area, but I'm optimistic.

Thanks,

Jack

I am planting 25 golden currant, 25 plum, 25 fragrant sumac, and 25 choke cherry going in on other parts of my property in the next 2 weeks. I am just trying to make it a place that the kids can shoot a deer or two. The rest of my property is mostly for quail.
Im in eastern Kansas

Best place to buy? Native Nursuries doesn’t have any. Also the area will flood in record events (had a foot of water on it in 2014 when water was lapping over the top of the spillway gates). Can crabapples take that?

Not for very long. Can you create mounds to plant on?

As Sandbur said if possible a mound would be in order. No fruit tree can handle being flooded for very long. I will have them available again next year check out our website and get on our email list. Not very likely you will find any nurseries with those this time of year.

You can probably still buy appropriate rootstock and scions and graft them yourself.

Fair amount of gravel in the soil. Some areas are hard digging with rock veins out there. Don’t know if mounds would be effective. Don’t have time to mess with grafting and what not right now. Got a lot on my plate through May.
