Is my tree dying? I noticed the top looked sick last summer. Borer?

A quick google search doesn't seem to be a borer though that hole is peculiar looking.

That's what I was thinking. I have a lilac tree by my bird feeder that looks exactly like that. The red bellies and going to town on it.

looks similar to hypoxylon canker that killed all the red oaks during a drought here in summer2011
