What do you think of this mix?

Catscratch

5 year old buck +
Sainfoin
Alfalfa
Aeschynomene (deer vetch)

It would be a strip next to my milo/beans/millet/sunflower strip. Spring planted.
Think these plants go well together? Add or remove something? Anyone with experience?

My experience with alfalfa is it does best when planted as a monoculture. YMMV

I'd only plant roundup-ready alfalfa. So, it doesn't mix well.....

Cold soil or warm?

Either way I’d add a grass. Any spring grain if cold soil, or a high biomass sorghum at a low rate in warm soil.

One place I messed up this year was I grew a blackout crop of jap millet, and it slowed down all my small seeds.

To be honest my original thinking was a pure stand of sainfoin. But I just can't keep myself from mixing things together so I started thinking of other stuff I could throw in with it. I actually have quite a bit of alfalfa in my clover plot that's next to this spot. So if it isn't a companiable mix then it'd be easy enough to leave out. The deer vetch was an idea out of the fact that I liked it when I planted it before so why not find a way to put it in this?

There’s always a pound flax. What’s funny is, I caught a green cover video on flax I hadn’t seen last night and Keith said cattle and wildlife won’t eat it so it can be a residue crop.

If it makes a seed head, my deer eat it. The wife will like the color.
