This stuff is taking over!

This thick stalked weed is taking over my plot. What is it and should I be concerned about controlling it? Thanks.

Appears to be a pigweed. I’d hand pull and burn what I could. It’s s summer annual and has already made viable seed. Too late to spray and mowing will just scatter it.

It's either pokeweed or pigweed.....and man what a different between the two. Pigweed is nasty and a bear to control. Pokeweed is far less of a bother.

Is the stem fleshy or fibrous and tough? Has the plant in question produced or have little clusters of black berries on them?

If it's pigweed you need to remove and NOT allow it to drop seeds if possible. Pile it up, let it dry and burn it. If it's pokeweed it's easy to control with occasional mowing. Pigweed can be a battle for decades to come.

I've looked your pictures over several times now....better safe than sorry. Treat it like it's pigweed and like it's a horrible cancer that pigweed is.

100% pigweed and not pokeweed. Stop it from seeding or you will have a mess. As already mentioned, those seed are already viable, so pull it and don't mow.

I pulled a bunch, but there is a bunch more. I will get in it this weekend and get rid of it as best I can. It just showed up about a month or 2 ago and has outgrown everything else in my plot. Should I try to bag it up and take it away from my plot or just pile it and burn it when I can?

It doesn't matter. Which ever is easiest for you to do.

Yep, that's not pokeweed. Pokeweed can be an outstanding deer food. Pigweed, on the other hand, can be a PITA.

Deer will eat it better than about anything you can plant at certain stages

They seek it out when it’s tender but when it gets Mature and goes to seed they don’t touch it. Around me anyway. Pulling them was the right thing.

I’ve converted bean fields to clover so I could just mow before it went to seed.

I have no intentions of leaving any of it at any time. I actually pulled some more yesterday that I must have missed. Tried doing it without gloves and the stickers got me. Those things are nasty all the way around.

No stickers on pigweed. I suspect you’ve got some nettle mixed in. I see it together at my place. And it’s no better to have.

Yikes! I've only ever dealt with red root. It pulls really easy.

I have it too and it's horrible. Pokeweed, on the other hand, gets eaten before the beans in my plots! They hammer it. I'm probably gonna spot spray this year.
