Sunflowers in LC mix

MATT

Yearling... With promise
Curious if anyone has every swapped sunflowers for the peas in the LC grain mix as the 'candy' attractant? I have to pay to have peas shipped were I can buy sunflower seed locally.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Sunflowers are 19% crude protein, high in fat and carbs and are preferred by deer over most other options. I see no reason not to incorporate sunflowers into any mix, Spring, Summer, or Fall. Plus they are darn cheap. I buy mine at the hardware store in bulk.
I'm really surprised no one has come out with a Buck on the Bag sunflower Super Spring mix marketed to food plotting deer hunters. Biologic is missing the boat !

Don't see why you couldn't, I tried a sorghum mix this summer and added sunflowers and they didn't get over 6-8" and were wiped out.

I'm trying sunflowers this year in a lickcreek mix on my throw and mow plots. If nothing else they will feed the soil.

LC's mix is meant to be planted in the fall (August/September) for close to a yearly food source. The peas and oats are the candy early, the rye and brassicas will feed through the winter and early spring and the clover will get established in the fall and explode in the spring for the spring/summer feeding. If you plant the mix in strips then the peas and oats will be gone in the spring so you should be able to start sunflowers if you choose. Sunflowers will only have a couple of months to grow if planted in the fall.

Sunflower used to be in Whitetail Institute Power Plant. Not sure if it's still part of the mix. They've changed it recently.

I'm trying something new this year...I did a mow and throw in my buckwheat. I broadcast black oil birdseed and brassica last week into buckwheat and then mowed it. I really don't expect much head development of the sunflowers since I broadcast it so late, but it should make some leaf forage. I'll broadcast some clover and rye around September 1st.

I've threatened for years to plant sunflowers late summer/early fall. No they won't mature. But they won't mature if I plant them in May.

I have no doubt they would replace the ice cream pea in the mix.

And cheaper by a good bit.
