So lets talk CWD

Looks as though the wild deer are spreading this massive killing disease again. Sure glad there are no deer farms anywhere near these vermin to pass on to the clean deer on farms. Iowa strikes again.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the presence of Chronic Wasting Disease in wild deer for the second straight year. DNR spokesman, Kevin Baskins, says samples taken from two deer in eastern Iowa tested positive.

“Both of the deer were within a five-mile radius of where the first wild deer that tested positive last year was found — and that’s a little bit southwest of Harpers Ferry in Allamakee County,” Baskins says. CWD affects primarily deer and elk and is caused by an abnormal protein called a “prion” that attacks the brains of infected animals, causing them to lose weight, display abnormal behavior, lose bodily functions and die.

While the disease was detected again, it was only found in two samples. “Certainly our preference would have been to find zero,” Baskins says, “but it means we do need to intensify and get even more sampling done in that immediate area and determine if these were just isolated incidents, or if we may have more out there.” The DNR increased the amount of samples taken in the area where the first wild CWD case was discovered and Baskins says the two positives were from half of the 300 samples taken. He says there is the possibility of more positives once the rest of the samples from that area are processed.

But there have been no other positive tests for CWD in the testing done on deer in other parts of the state. “It should be pointed out that since 2002, we have sampled approximately 57,000 wild deer across the state for Chronic Wasting Disease, and these are the only three which have tested positive so far, and they have been in a five-mile radius of each other,” according to Baskins.

The DNR’s wildlife research supervisor says it is believed last year’s positive CWD test came from a deer that had wandered into Iowa from Wisconsin. Baskins says that could be the case again with the latest positive tests. “As a matter of fact, that’s what we believe is the deer from last year wandered in from nearby Wisconsin. If you go just across the river, that county has had Chronic Wasting Disease for a number of years,” Baskins explains. “We obviously had the one last year that we felt probably crossed, and it’s certainly possible these two are in that same category where they were somehow able to cross the river where CWD had been detected in Wisconsin earlier.”

Baskins says the department is trying to stay on top of the situation to prevent the spread that has happened in other states. He says there is not vaccination to give deer to prevent the disease. “But, they are working on some vaccinations. The other thing that makes CWD monitoring extremely difficult is the fact that there really isn’t a good, reliable live test for CWD, particularly in white-tailed deer,” Baskins says. “For the most part, the only way to really get reliable tests is in some of the organs and some of the lymp nodes that are harvest after the deer has been hunted.”

He says the testing program has gone well thus far. “We have had terrific cooperation from the hunters up in Allamakee County in terms of giving us a lot of samples to work with,” Baskins says. “Right now information is kind of the number one thing that we need in order to formulate an idea of how to stem the spread of this disease.” The DNR says there is currently no evidence that humans contract CWD by eating venison.

The bait is out there.....biters?

The bait is out there.....biters?
You mean the truth is out there...Believers? 2 positives out of 150 animals and that many more to test. Whats the percentage of positives per animals? Yeah the facts are hard to read for some.

Keep jigging pal, you might set one here.

Not biting.

Sorry. Not looking for any kind of bite because i made an agreement with someone not to argue on here but seeing though a few others on here think they can make their own rules and do or say what they please that it would be a good time to again show some true facts on CWD and how deer farms are not the root of the cause but brought into the picture by the wild vermin.

You have just been shown more facts and there will be many more to follow i'm sure.

So....we got about 6" of fresh snow overnight and now it's sunny with bluebird skies and it's a muggy 34 deg. What's the weather like in your neck of the woods today?

Upper 30s here, I don't think it broke 40 at all. Pretty darn warm. These snow maps gives me warm fuzzies about next years deer season, especially compared to last year.

Freaking hilarious

Not biting.

Speaking of biting. I found the stages one would go through if bitten by a Zombie. On TV this happens much faster but since this was on the Internet it must be true.

You are Bitten

You are attacked by a group of zombies and can’t flee before one bites you!

Second Set of Symptoms- Hours 1-5

A fever will occur (99-103 degrees F). This will be accompanied by shakes, chills, vomiting, slight dementia, minor hallucinations, and pain in the joints.

Third Set of Symptoms- Hours 5-8

High fever (103-106 degrees F). Increased dementia and major hallucinations. Also extremities will lose feeling and you will have loss of muscular control.

Fourth Set of Symptoms- Hours 8-11

Paralysis of the infected area and lower body will occur along with numbing of the entire body. The heart rate will slow down and become weak.

Fifth Set of Symptoms- Hours 11-16

You will become unresponsive to all stimuli including severe pain. You slowly slip into a coma.

Sixth Set of Symptoms- Hours 16-20

Your heart rate will slow, and then stop. There is now zero brain activity. You are clinically dead at this stage.

Seventh Set of Symptoms- Hours 20-23

You finally begin to turn. Minor brain activity near the brain stem occurs. You will begin to move but only slightly because your blood is no longer flowing. Because there is no blood flow you have no control over your tissue and it takes several hours to get to your feet.

Final Set of Symptoms

Within this last hour you will be fully transformed. You will crave human as well as any other flesh. You will be violent and have no care for former memories or past friends.

You are now a zombie!

Chomp chomp I think zombies are cool, very appropriate thanks

Glad you got it and ran with it! Yeah the 10 day is looking pretty gentle compared to last year at this time! I'm thinking bucks have a good shot at making it through the winter in good shape and that does should also be in tip top...which means healthy fawns! Fingers crossed!

We have a big cold spell coming but keep dodging the snow bullets. No big snows forecasted in the next 10 days.

We have single digits forecasted for Tuesday...but that's boxed in by high teens and 20's. On another note I'll be in the cuse for the duke game in February....wife got us tix for my Xmas present! It's been 5 yrs since i was last in the cuse...looking forward to it.

Here I see a pile of replies in this topic and I was thinking people were arguing over the kool-aid flavor of the day and thankfully I found this. LMAO!!!!

Try to enjoy. Could be in the middle of a long loosing streak by then. I could have had center court 14 rows up but passed. I had final pick in our Christmas gift game and my 5 year old was unhappy with the crappy gift she had so I let her use my pick to take what she wanted. She went with a bird feeder instead of the tickets:( If it was last years team she would have had a crappy gift. My other daughter had second to last pick and she took a box of candy and movie tickets instead. You will have a great time, not much has changed since your last visit. Hungry Chucks still in operation.

When I was a student chucks was not in existence....however when my older sister was in school it was. So I have been to chucks before I was a student and then after I had graduated. Darwin's, 44's (later Konrad's), Lucy's, Faegans's and Harry's were the usual haunts in my day.

I have zero expectations of awin given this year's team. That stretch of the schedule would have been tough even with a better team. I was at the Villanova game this year...that game was super close and the officiating deflated our chances as it was pushed into OT. That would have been the feather in the cap for our season if it was a win.
