I planted RR sugar beets five consecutive years (2014-2018) back when I had a source(which has since dried up).
Observations:
For me, mature sugar beets were the most powerful deer draw I've experienced in 25 years of foodplotting. I have fussy deer, and they went nuts for the sugar beets - at least when they grew well.
It's important not to over-seed sugar beets; they don't like being crowded. RR soybeans make for a wonderful companion in a mix, just make sure not to seed too heavily. The soys will take browse pressure completely off the sugar beets while they are growing.
Sugar beets are a bit slow to emerge, in my experience. When planted with soys, the soys will be everywhere before the sugar beets make an appearance.
A spray, broadcast, mow, and cultipack methodology into a plot with weeds/grasses resulted in a complete failure both times I attempted it. The successful plantings of sugar beets I had were all tilled, covered, and cultipacked, with a glyphosate application roughly 4-5 weeks after planting.
