Riding Taylor Park, Colorado

While I should be planting, a friend and I are riding the Rocky’s in our RZRs. After hearing Spencer talk about going to Colorado to ride his side-by-side for four years during deer camp, I finally threw out the gauntlet and said, “Let’s go.” I bought a low-mileage 2019 RZR 900 ESP trail model and he brought his 2016 RZR 570 ESP Trail. The 15 hour drive (for me, 19 for Spencer) has been worth it! We towed the units with my pickup on his trailer. This was the first time I have operated the unit, which I bought over Facebook Marketplace with Spencer’s help.

We arrived Friday at 11, and rode for a few hours before checking into a nice two bedroom cabin. We added another 38 miles that afternoon, which included getting stuck in the snow at 11,600’. Both of our winches got a good workout. Only 60 miles were put on Saturday, but the going was slow as we traversed rocky trails and crossed several swift mountain streams (including one that provided pucker power depth and swiftness).

As far as wildlife, we’ve seen four moose (so far), three mule deer and lots of other small critters. What we have not seen in over two days of riding was a single other rider on the trails! The owners told us this is the earliest he has ever opened, and that his cabins are sold out from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I can not imagine how dusty and noisy it will be during the summer.

Today we are heading to Tincup for a community church service, then will ride to an abandoned mine about 28 miles from the cabin. I’ll post some more pictures in part two of this story.

While most folks like the wider side-by-sides, the 50” wide trail models are getting into places we could not go otherwise. The altitude has also shown me how out-of-shape I am, especially when trying to dig out a machine at 11K.

I've got a 2018 General ESP. Would it make it down the trails?

About 90% of the trails are for any sized UTV. The power steering is a huge help. Some of the trails are for motorcycles only and others are for 50” and under ATV/Trail Model SxS’s (they have boulders or posts to keep larger units out). We got on one 50” trail that was best ride of my life—with no close second. It took 1 hour to cover 2 miles, and the vistas were breathtaking. So far we have just north of 200 miles. About 10 of those were on 50” trails.

So far, this has been a motorized trip of a lifetime. We have not encountered a single other UTV on this trip! On most of the trails, we are the first to be on them this season. The cabin we rented has been pretty nice as well, and provided a great place to prepare meals and shower after a day on the trails.
