It might be Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia). To tell for sure you can look at the stalk as shown in my pic below and see the wings on the stem.

Wanna 'splain what that is? I have way too much wingstem and it would be nice if it was good for something, or ANYTHING.
 
I had to "google" it... its a moth

LOL, I knew someone would have to ask. They are moths, and in the caterpillar stage they are know to mine the leaves of wingstem. In fact, a lot of insects use the plant. But I’ve watched it for years and never seen deer or even rabbits take one nibble.
 
I don’t recall ever seeing wingstem in my prairie, but in the fence row behind our home it appears every year. The two places are 11 miles apart.
