Pear Tree from Seed

I started this pear tree from seed this spring (PYRUS serrulata). It is looking pretty good for one growing season.

I didn't measure it, but I'd estimate it to be about 6' tall.

Thanks,

AWESOME tree!

A buddy of mine had a pear tree come up out of a core along his fenceline ... where he throws the pear cores. Haha!

Do you plan to go ahead and switch over to known variety this coming grafting season? Or see what you get, perhaps? Last year, his tree grew about like your's. This year it shot up again and had a dozen fruit. They were small golf ball-sized pears that immediately split and oozed and fed many local wasps.

My partners bough some "Kieffer" pears about 5 years ago. They are self-fertile. They grew like mad, but never produced fruit. Finally this year, one of the trees produced 2 pears. They are not Kieffer. I don't know if they were mislabeled or if someone intentionally duped him to get rid of the stock they had. Either way, they obviously need a pollinating partner. So, my plan was to plant one with each group of existing pears and see if they improve production. Since I don't know what variety the existing pears are, I'll just need to try to find a good pollinator. I figure if these trees I'll be planting this year don't turn out to be productive, I can always top work them.

Thanks,

Jack

Nice tree. I have three growing from seed that have made it through one winter. I think they are mutant pears because they have big thorns. The deer have left two of the three alone. I only have them In 24" tubes. I have no idea what pear they came from but I am impressed they made it through a winter unharmed. No other pear I have tried has done that.
