Outdoor colored tags for trees

Native Hunter

5 year old buck +
I'm wanting to identify some oak trees with colored tags. I want something that can be left outside and withstand the weather for as long as possible - hopefully many years. Has anyone used anything like this?

Maybe anodized aluminum tags like they use for pets. Seems the rabies tag the mutt gets every several years is a different color. Check with pet supply places and would think an engraver tool would be best. They keep their color well if you think of all the crap that a hunting dog runs through. Or some fellas like to use plastic siding (UV stabilized of course) and engrave on that for trees. Maybe you could find home supply store or an actual contractor with misc small pieces and odds and ends to get a color palette for low dollars.

Those are good ideas. I've looked at some colored tags on Amazon and sent the manufacturer a question about durability. We will see what they say. I was thinking a different color for each species that could be seen a long way off.

If you are just looking for colored tags but not caring about writing on them, cow or cattle tags come in different colors, already have a hole to hang, and are easy to see from a long way off. Bonus: You can number each tree!

I hadn’t even thought of that and used to cattle farm....thanks.

I use the back of these tags plenty of room for name of tree, rootstock used and year planted. They should last forever.
