One good thing about wild grape vines

Nova

5 year old buck +
I walked to the home depot at lunch today and on my way I saw a wild grape vine totally smothering a decent sized female buckthorn tree. I had no idea there was any good use for them until now. Only thing better would have been to see Japanese beetles decimating the grape vine. Would be fun to hack and squirt all 3 at the same time!

This might be crazy to most, but I have little issue to letting some of grape vines grow, I do yank them down out of my apple trees (and saw log trees) but then I often drape them over the fencing and just let them grow... they are a pretty significant food source for my turkeys and other wildlife and I encourage their growth in my fence lines; I have plans to utilize them on a few funnel fence lines as a fixed food source. They have been around here for ever and just dont seem to be the issue others around the country seem to have... to me they are just another slice in my wildlife food diversity design - then again I dont mind box elder either...

Vines are like other "weeds".....they bother more in some areas than others.

And they can be highly preferred deer browse depending on the species.

They draw grouse in the fall. They do in our mountains anyway - they may be a weed to others.

I like grape vines as long as they aren't out of control. I just wish they would drop later in the year (like during hunting season) but since they don't, deer get to eat grapes in peace.
