Have not been to the farm for a couple weeks. I drove the ATV up to my FAVORITE orchard (30 trees). I saw this .....

It was on nearly every tree in the orchard. At first I thought FIREBLIGHT *#*%##%**!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But as I looked closer I could see
SEVERAL broken branches. Then I noticed there really wasn't the classic shepherds hook anywhere. Then I noticed this -----

I almost became the worlds leading expert on FIREBLIGHT last year by reading everything every published about it. I just didn't think it was FIREBLIGHT for lots of reasons, but it had not hit me. I decided to drive to town and go to dinner before doing anything. On the way, I noticed the tips of lots of trees were dead, maples, willows, oaks you name it. I knew it wasn't FB then, and then it hit me. We just had 6 weeks of Cicadia everywhere. They had killed some of the limb tips, and I THINK the broken limbs are from coons getting after the Cicadia.

So for you experts out there, when should I trim the dead out of my trees?

You are likely correct on your theory. You can trim dead branches at any time, generally the sooner the better.
