Nannyberry

Bowsnbucks

5 year old buck +
Anyone out there have any experience with Nannyberry ?? I was thinking of maybe adding a few to our camp property for more diversity and food for more birds. Interested to hear all pros & cons.

Have a 600ft headgerow of it planted around 12 years ago.

Took a bit to get going then took off.
Pleasantly supprised by overall height, would say 12-18ft tall. Planted on 6ft spacing. More of a upright grower. Less suckering an width than expected. Makes a decent screen.

Deer browse is low to moderate. Just think they probably have better options. Might be a different story this year with all the snow we are getting.

Birds love the berries, pick them clean in fairly short order. Also makes great nesting habitat.

Bonus: the berries make great wine. Picking enough is not hard, but time consuming.

Edit: also should add we started to see some natural regeneration about 5 years ago from birds deposting seed.

I planted a hundred or so nannyberry here in NW MN 6 yearsago , seem to be growing extremely slow. I have also noticed this in other people planting barely 5 feet tall after twelve+ years.

I also planted some elderberry a couple of years ago and was surprised at the birds that came to property. I've always has a few sharptail grouse in the area but rarely on my property. Since planting the elderberry I'm constantly jumping them from area where they are planted.

Guess I should add mine were machine planted, with landscape fabric.

90% of everything I plant gets fabric weed control of some sort. Otherwise grass would choke out most of what I plant.

Wish I could get that, county I live in has that available, but county land is in doesn't. Bummer!!

I just found a nannyberry plant with about a hundred berries still attached can I just plant these since they've already made it through the cold of winter, or do they have to pass through a bird?

Tis the offseason for planting prep, takes awhile, but more effective then chemical in the long run in my opionon.

Interesting use of the heat gun TBT.

I’m assuming you heat the edges to get rid of the fringes and loose bits?

I just cut my mats and the “fluff” is going to be a pain at planting time.

Yeah, find they last longer, otherwise the wind does a number on them and ya end up with a frayed mess.

I will be adding some nannyberry to my spring order for 2020 that I’m putting together now. Very interested in this shrub, wish I would have gotten on the band wagon sooner I like everything I’ve read about it.

I saw that in your land tour, I’m definitely putting some in shrub strips next spring...already blew past my habitat budget for this year and our turkey season starts tomorrow so I’m shifting gears back to hunting.
Wish I would have put some in a couple weeks ago.

We have a nice sunny spot for a row of Nannyberry along the north edge of a field. My son and I cut and treated some tree-of-heaven there last fall, and if they're all dead this summer, I'll order some nanny seedlings for next spring. They'll get all the sun they can handle. Probably have to cage 'em though.

I like what you guys are saying about them. Good pic of them Scott44.

I am so weak............just ordered 25 3' nannyberry and so they wouldn't be lonely in the shipping box I added 25 3' ninebark to the order.

Should be here by the end of next week.

H20 - You need an IV drip to combat "I have it bad" disease. When you feel the need to purchase "company" for the nannyberry in the shipment …………….. well …………….

I know it, I almost added some indian currant to it too!

The more I thought about the nannyberry the more I liked it and figured I better go ahead and get it started and growing this year...it is a late spring still cool and wet enough for me to get it in ground so I pulled the trigger on it.

If your habitat budget is like mine it's subject to change on what you find and think you might need :emoji_grinning:

Will nannyberry thrive in Zone 4?
