My Place

Suburbhunter

5 year old buck +
I finally decided to start my land tour, so here it goes. After about a year of looking I purchased 133 ac. last March in west central Kentucky about 2 or so hours west of Native Hunter, I think you guys have heard of him . Anyway, the property was formerly owned by a timber company who cut it about 5-6 years ago so right now it is super thick. I had my forester look at it and he said they didn't cut it that hard. I have a few white oaks that produced acorns this past fall and he felt it was ready for a TSI. Several hundred acres of soybean and corn pretty much surround me. Some cattle land to the Northeast. The block I am in is +- 400 ac surrounded by lightly used gravel & paved roads, with fallow fields and horses to the southwest. A special thanks to those who I bounced ideas/questions off of during the process, Native Hunter, wbpdeer, CentralKentuckyHunter, & Cedar Ridge.

This is the North field where the parking pin is. I had it brush hogged in April. There is a small pond that you can't see in far left built into the bank.

The above two pic are the L shaped field. Chestnuts are in the tubes at both ends. Still undecided on what to plant here. My bro ended up getting a tractor with a few attachments to get me/us going. He has a farm a few counties away. He is also my caretaker. :emoji_wink:

A 2 ac field in the bottom with chestnuts and an assortment of apple crabapple and pear trees on the perimeter. I put this field in clover.

We found a few native persimmon trees off of the bottom field.

I had a dozer come in and open up some trails and to repair the roads from the logging and erosion. There was erosion through the center of the bottom field which was also repaired. WW, red and white clover were planted here. Also opened up an old deck for a plot on the east side of the property which I seeded in WR. Need to save up my pennies and have him come back for more road work and a couple water holes.

While I was posting the property back in April my brother scored on a nice Tom.

Cameras have been up and running since last January when I put the place under contract. Here are the highlight:

Hopefully wbpdeer can make it back in the spring and we can find some sheds.

Very nice.

Looks like a deer magnet.

Nice looking place.

Very nice and looks like some great improvement projects so far. Lots of sweet bucks already on the place.

Great place!!

Looks like a great place! Congrats

Looking good for sure. Looking forward to following along on your thread.

Nice looking country for sure. Best of luck with it. Great start.

Nice looking place! I'm thinking of adding same Chestnuts trees myself.

I made back down to my place a couple of weeks ago. I was able to get a few more thing done:

Got 1/4 ac +~ ridgetop plot pushed out and planted in oats and berseem clover. It was an old logging deck.
Also had the dozer guy do some maintenance on roads and make a couple of new ones connecting thing up for easier access, as my place is a thick jungle after being logged 5-6
years ago.

Additionally, was able to do:
- Maintenance bush hogging.
- Start a persimmon grove consisting of grafted Deer Magnet, Morris burton and Sukis.

I also managed to get a few days of turkey hunting in with no joy in that department.

Lots of work there, looks good!

You have had a very productive spring so far, looking good.

I made it down to my ole Kentucky farm last week, in the hell like heat, to get my fall plantings in, which is a little early for my liking, but time is precious. Also got some general work done
.

Cleaned up the 2ac clover field that deer and turkey are liking, and tidied up around the Dunstans.

Apple and pear orchard at the other end of the clover. Back row was planted last year, front row planted this past spring.

This Whitney is my best from last year. It is now 10’ tall and clean. A little shocked at how much it grew.

Getting better at tree ID. I found a couple of chinkapins.

To be continued...

I hear ya. I’m going to be putting brassicas in a bit earlier than I like but you have to do when you can sometimes.

Looks good!

The place is looking good!

Just got back from the Ky farm and it was hot, hot, hot, mid 90’s almost all last week. I managed to get a few days of hunting in but got tired of sweating, so I got to work.

I found a bunch of native persimmons of which all the females were loaded.

I marked the line on this tube on this Chinese Chestnut back in July. It put on around 3’ of growth since then!!!

I had mixed results on my throw and mow brassicas so I decided to to overseed with a mix from my local seed supplier. 50% chance of rain on Monday.

Talked to the neighbors about their dogs.

Managed to get 5 stands up and ready for November. Staked up some Apple trees that were leaning. Also enticed a local farmer to plant a 2 ac field of soybeans next year.

How’d the neighbors take the dog conversation? I need to have one of those talks.

This was the initial face to face about the dogs. I kept it tactful and told them I understood that dogs get out OCCASIONALLY, but when I have pics of them chasing deer, yotes, etc... and pics of dogs about every other day/card pull, that's too much for my liking. One of them even commented that when you have more dog pics than deer pics, which actually isn't the case, then that's not good, of course I agreed. I also showed them pics of their dogs, which they identified as being theirs, and I asked them to shorten up their leashes. I also told them that we are going to be trapping and wouldn't want harm to come to a dog.
I'll give them a chance to remedy the situation. I didn't come off too hard or too soft at first, kind of like when you tell the neighbor to turn the music down the for first time. I will become more progressive as needed. Like I mentioned in the dog post, I don't need stuff to come up missing, destroyed, etc... Good Luck!!!

Got the dozer back this weekend. Enlarged one plot to make it about 3ac

Freed up native persimmons from impenetrable brambles so the deer could get to them.
