Michigan apple

this last weekend, my wife and I were driving through Michigan's elk country in the Pigeon River State Forest trying to view elk. After We stopped next to a clearing, I spotted an apple tree at edge of timber next to road. I am assuming the apple tree was wild, based on it location, but may be a named variety. Apples were still tart, needing a little more time to ripen. However, it had a very good flavor, and was probably the prettiest yellow apple I have ever seen, having a light orange blush on the sunny side. Unfortunately, I did not think to take pictures. I would love to have a stick from this tree to graft next spring. If any one in the upper area of lower MI wants the location of this tree, contact me and I'll give you directions.

Winter banana?

Buckvelvet, winter banana is a possibility. Just strange this lone apple tree was growing at the edge of timber all by itself in a state forest. No other apple trees spotted. Did not look like a location someone would plant a lone apple tree.

Dan - I found an isolated apple tree in the middle of mountains that are all forest. It was about 20 yds. from a dirt road. Maybe an apple core thrown out a car window ?? Or a hunter years before chomping on an apple while walking to stand ?? I hope you somehow can get a stick to graft. Sounds like a good, hardy tree.
