Massachusetts food?

Going to be in Massachusetts the next couple of days. I LOVE to eat and love trying local foods. Any must haves in the state?

They are known for seafood, the cod is excellent. If you can drive up the north shore coastline towards New Hampshire, you'll excellent lobster. Lobster is inexpensive compared to what you see in the midwest.

Then there in the Faneuil Hall market place. In there the Quincy market place has a bunch of places to eat featuring local foods.

Where in MA are you going to be? I am in the NW corner in the Berkshires. Not really sure if we have anything in Mass. that's traditionally known as a Mass. food. But certainly I agree with Tree Spud, out on the Cape and on the East coast there is a very rich Atlantic fisheries and lobstering culture. Cod, blue fish, steamers, scallops, lobsters fresh off the boat are quite a treat. A fresh lobster roll is a must have. Also fresh made New England style clam chowder.

Only problem is, I have no idea if that's a seasonal thing? Lived in Mass. most of my life but only go to the Cape in the summer. I really have no clue if you can find that kind of fresh seafood coming into the fisheries year round? Certainly, all of the little road-side lobster and fish huts and shacks that line the roads are all closed for the season.

Thanks for the replies!
I should have been more clear... going to be in Springfield. Spending a day at the Basketball Hall of Fame. Won't be close to the coast, or Boston. :(
A food market or a roadside stand sounds amazing! Would love to try a lobster fresh off the boat!

Everybody who lives east of Springfield thinks Springfield is Western Mass. LOL. They really have no clue that there is anything west of Springfield.

Was just at the museum last year doing some research for a documentary film I am making about local high school basketball in my little hometown of Adams. Adams sits at the base of Massachusetts' highest mountain, Mt. Greylock, and has a rich history of both high school basketball and downhill skiing going back to the 1930's and 40's. I produced an hour long documentary about the history of skiing in Adams back in 1999. Now I am looking to tell the story of basketball.

Enjoy the trip Catscratch. Hope you find some good eats somewhere.

Cool! I'd be very interested in Basketball one! My boys love basketball and my wife played when she was younger. She even spent a season in the WNBA as an Athletic Trainer. Got to meet a ton of the players back then.

Natty, your state is beautiful! After a week in NY it's awfully nice to see forest instead of sky scrapers. Have already seen a deer or two on the drive. Hope to find some seafood for dinner.

Holy cow...that's pretty cool about your wife.

Great to hear Cat scratch. Yes, as much as I do loathe the politics here in Mass....I am at least lucky to live in the very western part of the state in a very small hill town where it feels more like northern Maine or NH. There is some very beautiful and rural country in the Berkshires.

Safe travels.

We swing through Springfield every time we go to MA....mostly to stop at the statue of my tenth Great Grandfather Samuel Deacon Chapin on the corner of Chestnut and State.

I'm not a big city guy at all and I know you aren't going east, but....Boston is awesome! What a fantastic place to visit! Tons of history neat things to do and see and outstanding restaurants...our favorite the Union Oyster house, oldest continuous running restaurant in the USA.

And like Tree Spud said the Market Place is great to visit too.

Another cool thing about MA...McDonalds even has lobster rolls!

Wow, you have some history in your family! Did I read that right... that you are also related to John Brown? It blows my mind the history on the east coast!

The Basketball Hall of Fame was outstanding! Pretty amazing collection and presentation. We ended up eating at Cal's near the HoF. Had a sampler platter. It was pretty good. NYC was cool too, but I'm ready to be home! I hit my limit on the language barrier this morning. Absolutely sick of having to use my hands and single syllable words to order a tea (and still get it wrong).

Thanks for the advice guys!

Yes!
I am a direct descendant of Samuel Deacon Chapin...one of 5000 in the USA.
He came to America just a few years after the pilgrims, there are quite a few famous people in the family tree and a couple infamous...it's some neat reading. I've had direct relatives in every conflict and war the country has ever seen....a grandfather had his hip broken at Bunker Hill...another was with Teddy Roosevelt on San Jaun Hill.

So cool h2ofwler!!!

NY sucks. LOL. Tons of great food in this state.

If you find yourself near the Cape in Mass; I can tell you a ton of great places to go . Italian food in the north end of Boston (like AL Dente- Fruti De Marie; seafood pasta) is amazing.

The springfield armory is on the north end of springfield. It US historic sight. Kinda on the small side, but worth a visit. About an hour west is the norman rockwell museum if you can squeeze it in. I forgot if Savage arms has a museum still, but their main factory is right by the mass turnpike. There is like 500 weed store signs along that highway. I go past springfield every year when I go to RI for some fishing and camping.

The Hu kei Lau is closed, but was great there. Polynesiam cooking and they had the hawain firethrowers and brunettes in grass skirts. They served lobster back them too.

Diner drive-ins and dives I thought had a map or listing of places they visited. Hard to go bad with those. Champlin's in naragansett RI is on that list. I eat lunch and dinner there sometimes 3 days in a row.

Wish we would have gone to the Armory! The boys and I would have really enjoyed that.
