Man cave wall siding options

Mortenson

5 year old buck +
Need to expand the trophy room just a little. Want to finish the wall with something nice that won't break the bank. Knotty pine 1st comes to mind, but there are other nice products as well. It's just the section of wall under the staircase. Probably won't do barn boards. Any thoughts?

Neighbor used old rusted tin roofing off an old barn that looked ok.

I'll add, intentions are to hang lots of stuff from the wall. But yes, people definitely like their rust these days.

I finished the basement in my old house with tongue and groove pine boards from Menards. It wasn't too expensive and since it was solid wood I could move deer mounts anywhere without looking for a stud. I'd probably do that again if I ever redo the basement in our current house.

That's interesting, thanks. I never considered that you wouldn't need studs for pine boards. Definitely goes in the pro column.

I believe the boards were 1"x8"x12' with tongue and grooves on the upper and lower end. 1" thickness was enough that I had no issues moving deer shoulder mounts or elk and moose antler mounts.

I used T-111 5/8 in my basement. I used rough sawn cedar for all my trim to provide a little contrast. T-111 will "shed"sawdust so I used a palm sander to knock down the grain a little and then sealed it all up with a water based poly.

Last winter I logged about 20 decent hemlocks off my land and they are now all sawed into boards and drying. Soon they be milled into various widths of T&G. If I end up with the 2000 feet I’m expecting, it’ll cover the entire upper half of my new garage ( bottom half steel) and my trophy wall in the basement man cave. These are my 2 big winter projects this year.

***I would almost kill to get my hands on some of that walnut above for accent in the cave! Love that look!

^^ that 6 wlr grapple is bad. Some of those logs aren't large. How big of a walnut log could be milled into something you could use? I'll be thinning some 10 to 12" walnut this winter. Not much heartwood at all. But sapwood can be stained to blend in.

That machine belongs to the guy who sawed and milled my stuff. Such a cool operation he has! It’s small, hi tech, with top of the line equipment. He runs it mostly alone at his own pace.

No, not all of the 10’ sticks were over 7” diameter. Many were in the 12-16” range. But my logger friend said I should have the smaller ones cut into bigger lumber like 4x4’s. So I have a bunch of those coming too. Might use it for treestand platforms.

The pile in the pic is only about 1/3 of what I harvested. The biggest trees we felled were aabout 20” on the small end of the stick. There are larger ones here, much larger, but I was told that the real big hemlocks get ring shake.

I actually drive to Iowa quite a bit for work. Centerville, to be exact. I wonder if I could find some local rough cut walnut in that area?? Got me thinking👍
