Late ice perch fishing

That doesn't look like spring to me!

The fish look great though! I'm going to have to find a way to catch and eat a perch someday. I hear they are very good.

Nice haul on some fat perch. Do you have trouble with grubs in the perch? I remember my Aunt and Uncle having a cabin on a lake in MN and the perch were no good because of the grubs.

I don't think the grubs make fish bad to eat. Maybe just unappetizing if the thought of that sort of thing bothers ya?

holy smokes! Those are some fatties

Never have had that problem

Don’t think I’ve ever seen perch that have been fed so well.

Hot peanut oil takes care of that problem. More protein.

Those are some jumbo perch, that's awesome. Were you down by LaCrosse? I've heard they are biting well there right now.

We've never had a big issue with those white grubs in fillets from the Mississippi River, but some lakes have that problem.

The first time we fished Lake Vermillion, we caught a pile of jumbo perch that we kept. When we were in the fish cleaning shack, we learned why nobody else kept them. I've never seen so many grubs in the meat, there was no way we were eating them. It was odd though because the walleye, bluegills and northerns from that lake had no grub problems.

Having an Ice Fishing Shanty is a HUGE bucket list item for me. Anybody see something cosy for two that an ATV can tow. I do have a snowmobile too.

They’re spawners full of eggs…That’s a mighty fine looking pile of fish. Brian how developed were the eggs?

Yes, LaCrosse area

They're pretty developed I guess, only a few weeks away from them starting to pile up by the dams.

Growing up in Minnesota my grandfather would take me to a fish camp on prior lake. We would spend all day catching sunnies with mealies (maggots i suppose?). But anytime he caught he perch he would hit it on the side of the boat and throw it back. I never knew what that was all about. This was a man who loved to eat fish. I always grew up thinking perch were trash fish but I’ve seen been edumacated. Maybe he did that because of the grubs? First I’ve heard of that.
