Last night's moonlight hunt

Telemark

Had an amazing experience last night:

Hunting by the moonlight in a valley when two red deer came in at about 90 yards. We were hidden in a cluster of pines/spruce on a little hill, and trying to figure out age/sex on the deer as they slowly fed toward us. The moon came up above the mountain ridge and lit the valley up, revealing a couple of young stags.

They fought a bit at around 35 yards, and then a third stag came in at around 100 yards. The younger one went over and started play-fighting with the new arrival while the bigger stag kept feeding toward us. He ended up coming in an bedding down in front of us at 17 meters. We sat there checking out this 8-point red stag for a while, staring him right in the face when he looked up at us.

Eventually he ran off, taking the other two with him. But wow, what an experience.

I guess you can hunt at night there?

Sound interesting.

You allowed to use night scopes over there?

I waterfowl hunt all over Canada and they allow hunting until sunset and that has always been a strange one for me trying to find dead or crippled birds in the dark. Roost shooting is big up there and on a overcast evening the shooting starts early. Myself I prefer the morning hunts as its getting lighter instead of the other way around.

Night hunting is allowed, but night scopes are not.

We actually had six deer in a field Friday night, but they were at 140 yards, and there was a bit of cloud cover, so we couldn't identify age/sex.

If i end up hunting at night a lot, I will buy a better pair of binoculars or a spotting scope. I think electronic night scopes are allowed if they are not attached to the rifle. I think night scopes are allowed in Sweden, where we plan to hunt wild boar.
