Is this apple scab?

See pictures, is this apple scab that is affecting this chestnut crabapple? 2 years in a row of early defoliation in late summer. There’s also a very minor amount of this on adjacent trees which are predominantly scab resistant.

I’m going to hit it with captan early on next year.

Does look like scab but might be marssonina Leaf Blotch. Did any of the leaves turn yellow? That is what I tend to see with MLB before the leaves drop. Scab tends to affect the apples if there is any fruit to inspect to help confirm.

No fruit on it this year and yes I had some yellow leaves

Looked up marssonina leaf blotch. I think that’s it. Not a ton of research out there on it.

Here’s my one tree in the backyard showing Marssonina this year. Been dry until recently. You could spray fungicide but would need to figure out the timing of when to spray based on the conditions. I don’t think a spray or 2 in the spring would work like it might for scab.

That is not scab, especially with it being well mowed in that area ( #1 way to stay scab free is mowing) unless there are trees within the direct vicinity with scab and your not mowing under them (composting the leaves at a faster rate). Still, it's a Chestnut Crab, and as that tree matures, you will have plenty of clean fruit regardless of what the tree looks likes. I'm speaking from a wildlife standpoint if you want cleaner fruit for the back yard spray away, but Chestnut crab will be fine on its own. I usually see Chestnut crab cast leaves whether the tree has been dry or wet, but the fruit it carries is my end goal.

Appreciate the advice
