Identify this shrub/tree

Rit

5 year old buck +
I know this will be a tough ask with no foliage. I am starting to get a lot of this. It appears that something is eating the buds.

I know whenever the shrub is damaged it sends up a bunch of shoots. Also anytime a limb is placed horizontal is suckers like crazy. It holds its leaves almost until the end of November. The places I have hinged this is starting to make really good cover. I want to make sure it’s native and something good to have. I already have enough headaches in the form of buckthorn, bush honey suckle, and multiflora rose.

Seems like new growth is brownish before turning into the same color as the trunk. The tips have a reddish/purple color to them. Hoping for some kind of dogwood.

The leaves are opposite, simple, which tells me its a maple or a dogwood...looking at the leaf and based on what I have seen....I'm leaning dogwood or some sort.

Good input. I have loads of blue and green ash and can say it is not one of those. I am not familiar with all ash types though.

I have a couple different maples with a smooth grayish white bark so if it is maple I don’t think it’s the type I have.

I do have a few different dogwoods. I marked a couple that I can see from stand. I’ll monitor for browse and snap some photos in the spring after they leaf out and I get a look at the flowers and berries. Thanks

That looks an awful lot like the rough leaf dogwood we have around here.

There are a lot of things that match up with that when I read about rough leaf Dogwood. Excellent start to help me identify this guy. I really hope that is it. Seems to compete well with buckthorn. I found a few almost 20’ tall. I can cut them at 3’ and they will form a bush and send up 30 suckers for browse. Thanks again gents.
