Galvanized metal hardware cloth effective?

On some of my plantings in the past, I have cut pieces out to make a cone out of it and kept it together with pieces of wire I cut. I’ll put it around my tree ( about 6 inches around it) and bury it like 4 inches deep into the soil to protect from voles? In addition to this, I still use the window screen, 5 ft welded wire, landscape fabric and pea pebbles. I didn’t do it on all of my trees because I didn’t know if it would have a negative impact on the trees roots as they grow. Those trees today have no problems from voles. Have any of you used this method for extra protection? It’s a little more time consuming and money , but do people who use this think that’s its worth it or is it over kill? Has anyone used this method and still had rodent problems? If I was good with posting pics, I would post a pic of it. Maybe someone can post one that uses this method.
