Forsythia

Yarg

5 year old buck +
I know this is not a native but has anyone purposely planted it. my guess is the deer won't use it heavy so you would not have to cage them. Thanks

I have cuttings from last year that I will be planting.

I have not seen a ton of deer usage when more preferred browse is available. but I see it nipped at my in-laws.

My plan is to add them to shrub strips. I’ve noticed they will hold their leaves a little longer than other bushes. With a little pruning they really thicken up.

I've thought about forsythia. It can make a good physical barrier and screen. Thought about lilacs too. Just a question of cost/time/value and finding the right spot where it makes sense to use them. I'm not up on propagating them. I think you can buy 500 or 1000 small plants pretty cheap from larger nurseries but it would take time to get well established. I'm not sure if deer eat forsythia much. I know the lilacs in my yard get some browsing but nothing severe. If you can do it cheap enough, it would be something to consider.

I planted two on each side of the entrance of my plot. They were big shrubs I got on clearance for a couple bucks and I like to “landscape” my plots. Well... they are still alive after several years but the get rubbed to death and snapped off to the ground every year. They are a tuff plant and I think they could serve a purpose in the right spots.

I have planted a few and they are growing. At home, two of them are probably 12' x 12' and very dense. Great small bird habitat and would make a great road screen. Have not seen deer browse them yet.

Hmmm.
That is a great idea. I hadn’t thought to use it. It sure does add some beauty to early spring, too.

Makes great screens and deer don't like to eat it.
