Food Plot Architecture

Let’s see those food plot designs! Here is mine, the whole bottom green section is clover, purple is brassicas and red peas. I surround the whole plot with a screen for the first time and saw a big uptick in deer daylight movement. Originally the screen was supposed to cut through the middle of the plot to help guide the deer into bow range, but someone (me) accidentally weed eated it while cutting the clover.

Looks good! Mine will be put in this year and I still have some designing to do but I'm thinking of doing an E shape with corn rows separating each plot. Ideally I would have 3 plots of roughly an acre with all three surrounded by the corn and an edge of native plants separating the plots from the woods edge.

I should add each plot would have a different planting for different parts of the year (early fall, late fall/winter and winter/spring).

I like the kidney shaped setup, which yours is close to. Make those edges rough with shrubs.

You no till? Run discs close to the those shrubs and they might nit like it. Can also just do no till around the perimeter.

I till the perimeter to plant the screening, the woods behind this screen is a mix of green briar and open woods. I plan to leaf blow the forest floor along the plot to try and get additional sunlight through, to try and thicken the perimeter a little more

That layer of leaves is good for shrubs. I got both a stihl and a milwaukee pole saw. I like both.

Don't cut down everything. LEave a few spots for other treestands location, if you need the extra seclusion there. Dont go as high as you can with the pole saw, it'll get jammed up in branch if you go too much on the sides vs the top.

I’m gonna go crazy this year. The yellow are my switch/NWSG buffer strips. The grain blocks are soybeans on ~15” rows and the gaps in between will be 2 passes of Milo so 8 rows on 30”. Looking to break up sight lines and increase deer comfort. Everything will get overseed with a brassica/clover/rye blend in the fall. Smaller plot op top is a rye/buckwheat/brassica rotation trying to build soil.
