Duck carving thingamajigger...

I started this project on my habitat thread but it might be better placed here.

Started with a couple of firewood stumps that (in my mind) looked like flying ducks.

Pretty easy since there wasn't much wood to remove.

I didn't like that the 2 heads looked different so I spent some time trying to get them close-ish to the same. Wouldn't have cared if I was making them separately, but since I planned to pin them together thought they should look like a "pair".

Had minutes tonight since I pinned them and found a antler to set them on. Might keep it this way, or might make it a wall mount. We don't have a lot of table space so the latter option could be better.

The wings are to big. They're distracting. May have to find a way to break them down or something. Don't want to take away from the natural weathered look.

Thats really good. I wish I had some kind of art sense, it’s a gift.

Those look great Cat!

They look great. Interesting that you saw that in them.
I see giant bucks in the early dawn that always turn out to be a damn stick or something when the sun comes up. Less often now then when I was 16 🤣

Lol, I do that in the afternoons. A bush I've been looking at for 2hs all of a sudden morphs into a giant buck in the setting sun.

Cat ... would be interested to see what tools you used to cut down, shape, and form those.

Chainsaw, bandsaw, belt sander, and assorted rasps and files. The rasps and sander are getting used the most.

Wow I really like the look of the overall piece. I bet you could sell creations like that.

Those are beautiful, do you know what type of tree?

Thanks! They are locust. I think black locust as they certainly are not honey locust.

Black locust is very hard wood, it will last forever and probably for decades even if you buried it. Do you prefer working with hard woods?

Your rough carving already looks like the worlds oldest bird carving. 33,000 years old!

That one is way cooler than mine!!!

Lol, are you subtly saying I have the wood working abilities of a caveman?

I think that’s what he said, Cat. Basically yours looks like it was carved by a caveman with his teeth in the dark and then left to rot for a few thousand years… A beauty!

Now you can stop carving and tell everyone you were duplicating caveman art and nailed it! 🤣

Actually, I like the simple vague look over a detailed carving. It kind of flows with the rest of the wood.

I actually like the smooth flowing look better than a detailed carving too. I have a ton of respect for the guys than can carve something that's realistic though. There's some amazing tallent out there!

I started this thread with stumps that I could see being ducks. On this one I looked at a piece of wood and saw a face... a face and an arm growing out of it (might have been drinking). Grabbed a knife and started removing what shouldn't be there. Ended up with this. I'm actually kind of proud of it. Faces and hands are difficult to draw, let alone carve. I hope in 33,000yrs someone digs this up and says "WHAT THE HELL!".
