Cripps Pink

Telemark

5 year old buck +
Bought a few of these yesterday on sale. They were incredible. Anyone know anything about growing them? Anyone have scions available?

All I know is its trademark name is Pink Lady.

They are absolutely my favorite apple, hands flipping down. So much so, that 4 years ago I bought 3 trees from Stark along with some others, well before I had researched disease resistant varieties and rootstock. I forgot to tag the trees, and had at least 2 trees from that batch die the first year. Had a tree produce one apple this year that I swear was a pink lady, but I never got to try it for myself.

Looking at the Purdue resistances chart, they are pan-susceptible to all diseases and my experience and their poor growth have reflected that. I implemented a consistent spray regimen this year, and I did notice improved growth and the one apple in year 4.

If you are serious about growing them, plan to absolutely baby the trees. The good news is the one apple I had was still hanging into November, so it might yet be a decent deer apple.

Well that's a bit of a bummer. I was worried they would be susceptible to disease, otherwise I would expect them to be more popular. My wife thought they were delicious as well, so maybe I can have a tree near the house that I can really baby.

The lowest USDA zone for growing these is like 5 or 6 as well if I remember right. I wanted to grow some but would be a tough go in WI

Found out today the ones I bought are from Italy or Spain. I reckon you're right. I could possibly grow them in Ohio, but not Ontario.

I agree they're delicious. Very crisp and snappy, sweet / tart taste. Pink Lady / Cripps Pink is a very late apple. I don't grow any, but buy some every year to eat & add to sauce. It's a great eating apple.

Very late apple from what I have researched. I wouldn't bother growing it here in Mid/center Michigan (Zone 5).

What about Zone 6, ProfKent?

I think it would grow OK in Zone 6. Is it an grown in Australia? If so, what zone there? I don't know.

What?

Sorry, not too clear was I?
What I meant to say is I wondered what zone Cripps Pink comes from. I thought it was an Australian apple, I was correct.
From Wikipedia; "Cripps Pink requires a long, 200-day growth period and a hot climate, making them difficult to grow in more temperate latitudes or climates subjected to early winter freezes. "
For myself here in the Saginaw Valley of Michigan, our growth days range from 120 to 140. Well below the 200 needed to fully ripen the Cripps Pink apple. I have the same problem with Goldrush and Granny Smith.

Ok thanks for the info. I think I might try it in Ohio if I can find some.
