Bud capping White Pine

Grimby

Yearling... With promise
Now is the time to bud cap White pines from hungry deer in the winter months.
A stapler and recipe cards are all you need to protect the terminal bud from getting eaten.
Pull off in late April early May.
Now if I can only keep the little bucks from rubbing🤬

That's nice looking country in the background of your picture. Where are you located?

I've used some type of plastic bud cap stickers as well in the past and they worked well. After a year or two, they would just break down and you didn't even need to remove them.

Great technique. Thanks Ben. Get them past 5 ft tall and there’s no stopping them, until that little forky finds them, thankfully I plant many and can afford a loss or two, still makes me mad though! Lanesboro area

I lose balsam firs to rubbing. It was very bad last year. This year, as I'm clearing, I'm going to be piling brush around these released balsams. It's gonna put a lot of brush to useful purpose, and only take a few minutes per tree.

Good idea. I try to transplant in windfalls or brush too,it does help!

I like to fold my index cards into 1/3s and also staple some needles into the bud cap. It provides a nice stiff and meaty bud cap that wont come off. Avoid catching the leader. I can put a couple hundred bud caps on in a morning. I even like to bud cap some of my caged trees cause the heavy snow can bend them over plenty easy.

I ordered some browse blockers to try on my white cedar. The mild winter kept the deer on my land last year and they reached over the cages and browsed my cedar. Never tried browse blocker, but I have spent $100 on worse things.
