bud 118 spacing

Haus

5 year old buck +
I'm trying to maximize my limited space. What spacing should I use for Franklin Ciders on bud 118? Thanks!

What are your favorite apple trees for making cider?

I went with 20’ between trees and 24’ between rows. Most recommended more space between rows.

I went 21 x 24 ft spacing. Time will tell if it was enough, should be though.

Favorite for sweet cider (juice) Honeycrisp. Time will tell for hard cider. The bulk this year will be Sundance and Goldrush with some Dabinette, Wickson and ZumiCrab for tannin. In the years to come, I will have these to add to the contenders list...YarlingtonMill, KingstonBlack, GoldenRussette, NorthernSpy.

My trees at the camp are spaced 25' between trees, 25' between rows. I have an older orchard at my house, and they take up all 25' when mature.

Awesome, how bout the spacing ;)

Does the spacing change if doing crabapples on B118 or is that identical? I have Dolgo Crabapple and Kerr Crabapple coming on B118 next spring.

Although some varieties may be more “vigorous” that others, for all practical purposes I space all my tree on the same spacing, 25’ x 25’. I have crabs and regular apples all mixed in together on MM.111 and B.118 rootstock. My understanding is that rootstock determines spacing more than whether it's a crab variety or not.

As a FYI, I’ve been planting B.118 at 17’ on center with 21’ spacing between rows (about 180 planted over the last four years).
36 of those are Franklins
Good luck with your orchard!!

Same as Apple Junkie - 25' x 25' spacing. We have the space, so why crowd ??

I run 25-30 feet between my standard root stock trees, you'll want to keep some space/separation between trees for general health, light, and airflow for healthier trees. Dependent also upon what you will be doing with the ground around/in your orchard, their is an opportunity there to have value added by considering the ground around your trees as a potential food plot area. A little bit wider spacing could allow for better ground cover growth without to much shading out. Its just a guess but at 80% of what I typically distance trees at - so say plant 20'-24' minimum between trees with staggered row plantings you would be more than good enough - you can plant tighter but I think there is more value in healthy trees than crowded ones.
