Bottomland Bur Oak

5 year old buck +
I ordered 25 of the Bottomland Bur Oak from Iowa DNR nursery. There’s a few guys on here that have planted it … any pics ? Recommendations?

It must be some type of hybrid?

Is that like the swamp burs at Kelly's?

Looks like it could be mostly marketing hype, they say nothing about parentage or the notion of a hybrid - hybrids are frequently identified and promoted as "growth vigorous." They simply say the tree is best suited for bottom-land planting and produces larger acorns than a typical bur oak.
It certainly won't hurt to plant a few; especially if they produce large acorns.

I’ve read a couple Iowa landowners comment on it . They said it grows very fast ? I can’t remember if it was on here, or Iowawhitetail… or both ?

from the Iowa DNR web page .... maybe they got lucky?

I have some planted in 2020. They’re consistently outpacing swo planted the same time. There is one freak in the bunch that is about 3 times the size of the others with about 20 acorns this year. IMG_1764.jpegIMG_2310.pngIMG_2309.pngIMG_2311.png

This is also something the Iowa State website says regarding this tree that I thought was interesting. It may be resistant to bur oak blight? Do other oaks get blight or is this something specific to Bur? I assume that is different then oak wilt?

I won't have many this year. I will let you know next year if it produces any, which I'm wondering if it won't have many? Aren't white oaks somewhat biennial?
