Add flooding to list of apple tree assassins.

As if a young orchard did not face enough challenge from drought, pests, diseases, hungry deer, and bears being bears, now you can add flood waters! This past week, tropical storm Fred played havoc on my portion of the NY Southern tier. Larger trees weathered the high water relatively well, but the younger trees got pummeled. I have pulled them back upright and staked them to keep them in position. Hopefully, they will re-anchor and be none the worst for wear in a year or two, but boy, they sure looked ugly at first glance. Three examples... Cortland, Chestnut crab, and Harrison.

That's painful to see.

So sorry to see that. Hopefully you can get it all fixed up and they survive

OUCH. Was there much wind with it, or mainly rushing water?? It looks like the grass is laid over one way - stream go over it's banks??

Your repairs look good - I'll bet they hold on.

Very observant Bows, all water damage, no wind. Yep, creek jumped its bank. Damage to my younger trees pales in comparison to the damage to area roads and villages. I’m pretty sure my apples will recover, not so with what others lost. Steep hills, thin soils, equal high water events… you probably know this from your camp in N. PA.

Wow!
With the trash left on them that was some serious water going through.

I hope everything works out for you and wishing you the best.
