    First quail on my farm

So I've been working for 3 years on improving habitat on my farm in west central kentucky. Mostly for deer and turkey but have really put in some work on quail habitat in the past 18 months. Long story short, my grandfather trained hunting dogs and was a big time quail hunter. I always...

    Cuddelink general Q&A recommendations

Question for the cuddelink experts. I moved a camera today, a J series, to a new location. It does not seem to be taking pictures, and on my report I got this evening for level it just says "good". It's maybe 100 yards from my home camera on flat ground so I know it's not a distance issue. I...

Can I get by planting cereal rye early as an early food source

I'm in West central Kentucky and I plant oats/radish in mid August and have great success. Really good early bow season draw. Can come back later and overseed rye if you have gaps or want all winter food.

    Study on overseeding into Soybeans

I'm going to test out some of these theories on my ~7 acres of soybeans and will update this thread 🤘

    Study on overseeding into Soybeans

https://extension.sdstate.edu/inter-seeding-cover-crops-soybean I found this study from South Dakota State about overseeeing different cover crops into Soybeans. The study is fascinating and contained research areas from zone 3 to zone 7 (so not just South Dakota). Really interesting to see...

    Mowing overgrown clover?

Why are you wanting to mow it? Do you have broadleaf weed problems? The science is pretty clear (see Dr. Craig Harper's work) that mowing clover is not only unnecessary but can do more harm than good. The youngest leaves on clover are the ones on top. Anecdotally I definitely see more use in...

    Cuddelink general Q&A recommendations

Alright so 4 of my cuddeback cameras are saying Firmware 8.3 and 2 are saying firmware 1.4. Thought they were all the same. How urgent is it that I get them all on the same firmware? Am I potentially missing pictures?

Food plots SW Wisconsin for November

I've learned this the hard way in kentucky as well. There is definitely such a thing as "too thick" cover. In freshly cleared areas I'll have blackberry brambles grow up like gangbusters and make rabbit and mice paradise. Have to at least cut trails and pockets to get any deer usage.

    Your best fall mix?

Replace the crimson with red, I've had great success with that over the years. And my deer won't touch most brassica, but will browse every single radish I plant. They eat plenty of other things for me to wait until they get a taste for the rest of the brassicas!

    Your best fall mix?

Rye, groundhog radish, crimson clover. Relatively cheap, simple, and works as well as anything else.

    Sorghum-Sudangrass and Soybeans

Has anyone ever planted a mix of Sorghum-Sudangrass and Soybeans? I've got a 3 acre area I'm hoping can serve as cover with the added benefit of some food value with the beans. And if the beans get overbrowsed it's not a big deal as I'll still have the cover of the sorghum sudan. Let me know...

    Favorite/Best Food Plot Seed

And I'll say my favorite mix is a cereal grain, crimson clover, red clover, and daikon radish. Nothing fancy, good for the soil, and feeds deer almost year round.

    Favorite/Best Food Plot Seed

Depending on where you live, you can probably find a local seed supplier. Just Google it. I have a great one in my small town who I use every year. I get great prices, don't pay shipping, and support local business. Best of all worlds!

    Browse impact on Radish tubers

I should add, the leaves grow back on mine but I don't get huge tubers either because of the browse.
